Oxycotin - Changes to Personality?!

Question: I have a relative who has been prescribed oxycotin by her doctor for spinal pain. She's been on this medication for over a year now and the last several months she has had really strange changes to her personality. I've heard how addictive oxycotin is and was wondering if these changes are due to the drug. One noticable thing is she cannot seem to complete a sentence anymore. Halfway through a thought process, she seems to get totally lost and drifts off in mid sentence searching for a word.....Another thing is her personality has changed from being sweet and caring to being paranoid, thinking everyone is out to do her harm. She also gets very angry and resentful at the smallest thing. Other times she's told me complete stories that are total untruths....it is scary to be around her sometimes.

Can anyone tell me if these side effects sound like they are associated with oxycotin?

I was addicted to oxy"s and then eventually heroin. Sounds to me like she is either abusing them, or on too high of a dose or she may be mixing them with another drug that is in the benzo class. I.E. xanax, klodepein...ETC. She needs to get help. My friend was prescribed oxy's for years. He finally got strung out. He would snort them. He would lie to the doctor and say that they weren't working very effectively for his pain. I also had a client of mine that was prescribed them for a very serious illness. When his illness was cured, he had to go through a long period of detox and withdrawl. Beware of certain doctors. My mother is in the health field and has witnessed doctors, who will get thier patients strung out on oxy"s just so they will keep coming back in for the office visits. Some of them are basically just legal drug dealers. Some are even addicts themselves. So, pick your doctors wisely. I wish you all the best and feel free to e-mail me anytime. Take Care

My brother was given this for arthritis pain and is addicted. Your relative sounds like him. ?

Yes, my father used it for the same purpose, after spinal surgery. And its no joke, he went from being a carefree hippy to being a conservative republican!
Of course he has anger issues as well, it almost seems as though a switch flips and he freaks out.
You just need to help her get off of it.

It is very common to have all of the changes you are describing with long term use of the drug Oxycontin. I am sorry you are experiencing this. Here is a site that might help you learn more about this drug.

Many of the symptoms you are describing sound like possible effects of opiates such as oxycodone (the active ingredient in OxyContin.)

It sounds like a possible case of opiate-induced psychosis. Consult a pharmacist or neurologist for more information, as the information provided to me is not diagnostic in nature.

Stay away. She's a junkie. Just because some sap doctor has prescribed her Oxycontin (note spelling) for life, it doesn't mean that she's not the world's worst addict. I HATE the Oxycontin addicts. They are the worst patients. Everything in their life is PAIN. You put them to sleep with anesthetic, then just TRY to wake them back up. They just SCREAM with pain, you give them more pain meds, and they stop breathing. Their whole life revolves around their pain. The is NO solution. Just stop hanging around. Really.

yes all of the above are along with weight gain and real bad breath

these are side effects and she may be taking to much or should consider a new med.kara
