A few questions about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder...?!

Question: Does this sound like OCD? I have to check to make sure all my doors are locked several times before I can go to bed...even if I just tried it and saw that it was locked- I have to do it a few more times or else I think that someone will come and kill us. If I don't it just eats at me and I can't sleep and will have to get out of bed to check again. And other weird things- like if I don't like where I put something down, I have to move it somewhere else or else I think somehow my son or my pets will hurt themselves on it, even if it's something harmless. It doesn't have to be neat, just somewhere different. It's like my gut keeps telling me to do this or something bad will happen. It just started in the past couple of months. I have a history of anxiety/panic attacks and depression, but I have a pretty good handle on all that now. Does mental illness like that make you more susceptible to OCD? I really don't want to get back into therapy, can you treat it on your own? Thanks.

Seems like mild OCD. A Compulsion would be something like having to touch a door knob exact same number of number of times before turning it, or flicking the light switch on / off exactly same number of times. The key thing about differentiating true OCD and mild OCD-like tendancies (not true OCD) is repetition and order and pattern.

Another example would include, drinking glasses have to be filled evenly on the dinner table, Or all books and movies have to be in perfect order, and if it not it will drive you NUTZ until you ABSOLUTELY have to change it cuz you cannot concentrate on anything else until order is established.

The fact that things do not have to be neat seems to tell me you have OCD-like tendancies mixed with true anxiety, but not true OCD.

Good luck..no worries... sometimes it takes simple concious awareness to break your habit cycles. If it still persists try talking to a therapist. They can do wonders and dont feel so embarassed to go... many healthy normal people go.

It definitely sounds like OCD, but there is a medication that treats it very well. Don't be ashamed of it as it is very common.

Sounds a bit obsessive about security but OCD is when you do things in a ritual system, the extremes of all habits. OCD is really complex and has more than a couple repeated things to it. Like Monk does everything the same way every time or he freaks out. You can't really treat OCD, it's just what you do as long as it doesn't get in the way of functioning properly. Put pad locks, install a security system and relax. You will become a nervous wreck if you don't get sleep. Sounds more like anxiety to me than OCD.

Sounds like OCD, but I am not a professional.

YES, go see a doctor. I only had to read the first sentence. My ex-husband was crazy that way. One hour standing outside the front door turning the lock, counting, turning the lock again and again and again. Same thing with the car door. If you ever want to be happy and normal go to the doctor now and get therepy and drugs. My ex lost everything in his life because he had no clear picture of what was real anymore. People aren't going to spend much time wanting to hang out with you as your issues grow over time. He also thought the entire food system was infected with the AIDS virus and would feel food containers for hours also feeling for puncture holes from needles. You can get help from this, don't let it ruin your life and everyone around you. You deserve a normal life if you can get it. It is a chemical imbalance and yes you sound like a strong candidate for it.

Sounds like OCD.Some other things that OCD sufferers do is collect useless stuff - like empty water bottles just out of fear that they will need them and at that time if they dont have one what will they do.
OCD is quite common but people awareness is not upto the mark.

yes that definitely sounds like OCD. OCD commonly occurs with depression and panic attacks. it can be treated with therapy, medication or a mixture of both, the medication is almost always anti depressants, this will sort out your depression but may not cure your OCD entirely. im sorry to say that the best treatment for OCD is actually therapy.
