For it to work it takes about a week...and it works REALLY well...can make you tired, but take it at bedtime and it all works out fine. Should eat with it for the first week because it induces the part of your brain that signals stomach upset. Took care of all anxiety and excess worry and still works great
a year later. (Spoken by relative of Heart2Heart) Hope it works for you too!!! Take care.

It worked well in the beginning. I then got very tired, but felt these from every med I took so I wouldn't hold that against Lexapro. Then it started to wear off.. and I have been off meds for 2+ months. Good luck!

Lexapro works for different people, but be sure you give it at least a month and don't stop taking it all the sudden..the mood swings are awful. :)

It made me tired. I wanted to sleep all of the time. & was always tired. I had to change meds.
Give it a month. If the side affects are bad after that long...have your Dr. change meds. Everyone is different.

I've had friends that took it. It took about 3 to 4 weeks to start working because it needs to build up in your system to really start affecting change in your serotonin levels etc.

The next day you could experience some jaw clenching or dilated pupils but that will only last a short period.

Be warned that it sometimes causes nightmares or night terrors for a few days after a couple of weeks of use but it subsides. Overall anyone I've known to use it felt that it served it's purpose and was as or more helpful than most other anxiety or anti-depression medications.

Good Luck, I hope you get well!

I used it for about a year while still going to therapy to address the core issue.. It worked very well once I was able to regulate the dosage to my body. I started with 20mg and had side affects, drowsiness, lethargic, etc... But decreased the dosage to 10 mg and all was great! I worked with a great therapist and my personal physician during this time frame. It was great to feel the depression symptoms diminish.

Its whats called a selective-5HT-reuptake-inhibitor. Basically corrects in imbalance in the levels of seratonin in the brain by not allowing the body to uptake excessive amounts of the neurotransmitter. As a SSRI its the best type of anti-depressant/anxiety treatment available. Doesnt have the major side-effects of of older MAOI's or trycyclics.

If improvement isnt seen in 4 weeks.. the dosage is usually increased to around 40mg/per day. So, within 4 weeks you should see improvement. Upset stomach, headaches, nausea and sexual dysfunction are some reported side effects.
