Where can I find a good therapist?!

Question: My biggest problem is anger management, or specifically a lack thereof, although I think that there might be some larger issues at play, but I need someone to hash through it all with me.

So where do I go to look for a therapist? How do I know if one is good or bad? I've never had to look for a doctor before so I don't know where to look or what to look for. Any advice given would be much appreciated.

If you know of a good one in either the north side of chicago or the nw suburbs that's where I'm looking at. No Christian therapists please.

No, no. Some of the answers below are wrong--no offense. I used to work in a psych hospital as a counselor. First, you have to make an appt. with a PSYCHOLOGIST (basically a licensed couselor who cannot prescribe meds). Then, if that professional feels that you need meds, he or she has to REFER you to a PSYCHIATRIST. You cannot just go straight to a psychiatrist. The two problems with this conquest is that it could take up to two months to get your first appt. and second, no one can tell you who is a good one. It's a trial and error thing. I had to go through 4 before I found one that I felt understood me and wasn't some flake that told me to put a rubber band around my wrist and snap it everytime i had a negative thought...uhhh. But it's up to you how badly you want help. If you want it bad enough, don't give up. Just start in the phone book.....It sucks, but when you find the right one, you will be blown away at how they can actually read your brain more than you can read your own....GOOD LUCK!!!

Your psychiatrist will refer you to one, cause your therapist is sort of like a prescription.

Check to see if there is a local Mental Health Center or clinic where you live. Maybe there is one at a large hospital.
This would be some place to start.
Good Luck
