i'm not a fan of meds either..

one of the best depression/anxiety relievers i can recommend is exercise.. it takes your focus off what's bothering you and hey it's just good in general.. exercise also releases serotonin, dopamine and a few other nuerotransmitters in your brain.. serotonin deals with sleep and mood regulation and dopamine is related to pleasure and happiness.. those chemicals i just mentioned are the ones that your brain lacks when depressed.. exercise helps to balance them.. this has been clinically proven to work faster and longer than medication.. simply taking a twenty minute walk each day could really help..

exercise also releases endorphins.. the body's natural pain killers.. this is related to "runner's high"..

i understand you may not be motivated to do a lot.. so start off slow.. just walk for five minutes or so.. then add a minute or two each day and work your way up..

other than exercise you could try deep breathing, muscle relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga, listening to music, writing in a journal, or talking to a friend about it.. i also drink ungodly amounts of tea.. haha..

get a good social support network.. talk to a friend or family member about how you feel..

take time out for yourself each day.. to just reflect, relax, and settle your thoughts.. do things that relax you and that you enjoy..

warm milk also helps to produce serotonin.. so maybe drinking a glass before you go to sleep may help.. this will help if you have trouble sleeping also..

try to get at least an hour of sunlight each day.. this also helps to balance your brain chemistry and produces serotonin..

when you lie down to sleep, concentrate on your breathing.. just keep a steady inhale and exhale.. in through your nose and out through your mouth.. this will help to calm your heart rate and hopefully help you sleep.. do this anytime you feel yourself getting anxious also..

eat a healthy diet.. and drink lots of water..

if you tend to put yourself down, don't be hard on yourself.. try to make a list of things you love about youself.. if you feel that you cannot make the list, then have a friend or family member make it for you.. when you start to put yourself down or feel bad, pull the list out and read it.. remind yourself that you're special and deserve to feel as such..

also if you don't already have one, a pet can really help.. they are there for you and give you a purpose.. it's been proven that people with pets live longer and happier lives.. if you have a dog then take them for walks.. the sunlight, fresh air, and exercise would be great for both of you..

i hope this helps.. and best of luck..

if you have really bad depression you might want to go to a doctor and get checked for bipoler disorder. expessially if you have big mood swings

Well I have suffered from depression for a long time, but like you did not want to go on meds. I did research and discovered that I must get adequate nutrition, vitamins and minerals. Also I must get enough exercize on a daily basis first thing in the morning is best. On grey days I sit under a happy lamp and I find that overall If I think positive I am free from symptoms. I hope this helps and good luck and think positive!

its hard to deal with because people around you think they understand but they dont, or pretend they do..or just think its all in your head...

its hard i know..i dont have depression anymore but was there before...:(

i hope you feel better..just keep in mind that you have to love yourself and be strong...

find things to do and make you happy. if you want to cry, give yourself time to cry your heart out..

things will be better..

well, you should not be thinking bout those sad things..

i know how its like,
easilly angered etc

but just try not to be stress, somethings making you feel this way
you have to find that source that makes you feel this way..

once youve found it, you'll be happy again =]

i always forget bout those stressful things, id be positive and not be thinking negatively..

i love you baybie =]

ps that girl who post that link, ive post your links back at her question =]

I think it honestly depends on why you are depressed.

The other thing to consider is that some scientists think that some people mistaken depression for anger, stress or unsettled feelings.

Ask yourself why you are depressed, and then try to move on from there.

If you have clinical depression instead of depression because of a major emotional event such as the death of a loved one,the clinical depression is actually physical in nature;
the chemicals in your receptors in your brain are out of balance.
Just as you would have to take vitamins to correct a deficiency to feel better, you are going to have to take meds to correct the imbalance,
I fought depression for SO long before starting meds, and it put the people who loved me through a lot of unnecessary pain.
if this is going on and on,please reconsider your position on meds.I am so very glad I did.
Be blessed.

Depression is something I've been dealing with for a few years now, so I understand what you are going through. What I found to be most helpful was exercise (it's a natural way to boost endorfins). Also, talking about how you feel to someone you are close with might be more helpful than talking to a complete stranger (therapist) about it. Do NOT hold everything in...I was always afraid to talk about my depression to others and just kept quiet about it for quite some time. When I started opening up more, I felt much better! If you find that depression worsens for you seasonally in fall and winter, I've heard of people using "light boxes". A high spectrum light in a quiet room while you are studying or working actually helps a lot of people with seasonal depression. I hope everything turns out ok. Just don't give up...you will learn how to cope eventually.

I've battled depression for years. I tried everything from thinking positively, to vitamins, to meditation, you name it...I tried it. But nothing helped. I would pretend it did for awhile, but would fall back into the depression even worse. I finally ended up attempting suicide because it got so bad. When I was in the hospital, the doctors worked very hard to find a combination of meds that was right for me. It took a little while, but I finally found the one that works for me. I'm so glad I started the meds. They really help. Maybe if I had started them sooner my family wouldn't have had to go through so much pain. Whatever you decide...Good luck!

most of the time depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain. Meds aren't very healthy for you but they can help. It's good that you're seeing a therapist but maybe you should just consider taking an anti depressant. Maybe just try one out. I was depressed and i attempted suicide. I became very unhappy with my life and i would take drugs, depressants usually. Morphine most of the time. It was easiest to get, i even went so low as to drink cough syrups with codeine in them to make me drowsy so i'd sleep more often then normal. I did experiment with cocaine a few times too. Eventually i decided to attempt suicide.

Taking meds won't make people think you're crazy or anything. Sometimes they just, help.

I never saw a therapist. My depression was what led me to music. I would listen to music from artists who had suffered from what i was suffering from. That was eventually what helped me out of it. You can always talk to me too, if you need to.

eat walnut everyday...it contains nutrients for your brain.
exercise is the best treatment on earth
avoid abusive people....a lot of depression can happen after being bullied
try to sleep well at night...good sleep helps your brain
avoid sugar just fruit and honey.
try to eat during the early hours of the day and not eat after 2-3 p.m in the afternoon.
try to find someone you love...love is very important

I really needed the meds to keep me alive so therapy would have a chance to work.
Through therapy I'm learning how to take control of my life by changing the things I can and not worrying about the things I can't control.
So far I'm going to school for a major career change and working on getting my debt down.
I was off the meds for a while but had to start taking them again but hopefully I'll be able to stop them again.
Taking a daily pill isn't bad and I make sure to take it when my wife can see me do it.
She hasn't been very supportive and our marriage is also something I'm working on changing.

yes i have depression. I tried asking a question about how to commit suicide with minimal pain but yahoo keeps deleting it
