Why do people consider my OCD rituals as childish & immature?!

Question: For example, people would think I'm childish for avoiding riding a bus with numbers I don't like because "it's just a bus like any others & will still get you where you're going". If I rode bus 612, I'll be HAPPY to get on it since I like the # 12. But if it's bus 96916, Not for me.

Or they get turned off because little things annoy me, & they think it's very odd that I pay very close attention to something very minor. & when I tell them not to violate my OCD habits, like them smacking loud with their food, touching me with their dirty hands, or interrupt me while I'm listening to my favorite songs, then they violate me on PURPOSE, JUST to trigger off an anxiety attack & when I have the attack & have to go to the hospital, they LAUGH. That's not funny. & with the music, if I'm interrupted, that wastes my time because I have to play back the WHOLE song again from the beginning. & this causes my relationships with people to fail, but I have 1 friend who respects & understands me.

People like that cannot understand your desperate efforts to ward off anxious feelings by repeating your OCD rituals. When you ask for some consideration they might think you're being petty or starting trouble.

Being different should encourage sympathy from others but not everyone has compassion and understanding of their fellow humans. What if it was something really confronting like Tourette's Syndrome with explosive swearing etc? People could be less accepting over one like that.

Treatment may include solutions like:

* desensitisation
* relaxation
* journaling
* sand work therapy
* art therapy
* behavioural kinesiology
* cognitive re-learning
* exposure & response prevention

All the best.

Because people do not understand the power of compulsion. By definition if they do not suffer it, they cannot fathom overwhelming compulsions to do things or not do things. Just as people do not understand the compulsion to self harm, suicide or cutting. Sometimes you have to be on what some would call the wrong side of the fence to understand.

Sometimes, if people do not have the empathy to understand, then they simply cant understand without experiencing it.

I encourage you to seek help to manage your compulsions if you are not already doing so. There is the risk they could escalate and dominate your life further. So act to help yourself now.

I am truly sorry for the miss treatment you experience at the hands of some. There is no getting away from the fact that some people get joy seeing others suffer.

Hang in there, fight the fight, be safe, be sage

Not all people think it is childish.

That's horrible that people do that to you. That actually pisses me off. How can people be so freakin' insensitive?!?! People need to respect others and their problems.

that's friggin awesome!! i love people that are not molded to what society considers "normal".. but what fun is it to be normal???? anyone can be ordinary, but it takes someone that is not ordinary to become extraordinary and you cannot subject yourself to the normal rituals of society.... ok, i'm a dork, lots of big stupid thought filled words there... anyways, you friggin rawk dewd!!!!

first and foremost.. OCD rituals is not childish and immature

OCD have rituals to suppress anxiety level...

to decrease the idea of thinking bad hurtful memories subsconciously ..the kind of memories which u cant express

moreover the people u are wit' are not your real friends..coz if they do they do should accepted u as who you are and respects you .. not to laugh at you or try to do things that annoy you..they are not your friends, tell them how u feel about it if they will listen and change a bit then good for u but if not then you dont need them.."the people you need are also the people that needs you "..stick wit' the friend who pays great respect in you as u have mentioned..u dont need a lot of friends if they are not real..its ok to have 1 friend as long as that person is real and respects you

all of us are not perfect and "imperfection is beauty" so dont let them bring you down .. " if you dont fight for something then you will fall for anything" Good luck

I too have OCD, and I now know it is an inherited illness and a disease just like any other, and it's NOT funny. Please see a psychiatrist and get the proper medication for it; it has helped me a LOT to have a professional to talk to and to get the right medicine from.

dont show any reaction, be quiet with neutral face, cause thats what they like. I know it sounds sick. (I had to write this again cause I have ocd too). people are so immature.

getting some help will help you. I feel good that I dont wash my hands that much often.

I think it's the people who are reacting as you've described who are childish and immature.

I have OCD, and got really stressed out for a while cause people didn't understand why I was doing what I was doing. But I explained it to them, and now they know to leave me be, or to avoid situations where I'm going to react.

The reactions you have described lead me to believe you are in school...(cauz it sounds like some of the teenagers I've worked with).....if this is the case - tell someone, or just avoid the people who are doing it.
