He really needs to get professional help. When my daughter was doing it, she was very ashamed of it but didn't know how to stop, I told her if she didn't I would tell the world, that helped some, but not as much as professional help and getting her away from the issues that were causing her to cut in the first place.

Find out WHY he does it, its a scary thing to hold that secret. Telling his parents is not going to help him if he doesn't want them to know, he will just find other places to cut that you/they can't see

Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Tell his parents and then tell your friend that you are not prepared to discuss it with him yourself because you don't have the expertise.

Now let me explain what I mean:

I was a cutter for many years and the more my friends gave me attention the harder it was to give it up. For a long time I told no one and then when I came clean with it and told people the problem exasperated due to the sudden attention.

Then some caught on and did what I have suggested you do. They eased right back and told me to get professional help. If I had a new cut they ignored it. I got the help and I hardly ever cut now.

This is a very serious addiction. I know you want to help him, but he needs a professional. Tell his parents, or give him the option: either he does or you will. Or tell a trusted adult - a teacher or your school counsellor. They will make sure he gets the help he needs.

Be there for support, but he needs to do the work.

You sound like a wonderful friend for wanting to help him...I hope you know that.

Assuming your meaning cutting of the wrists or other body parts like emos sometimes do i would say tell his prents but tell his parents to go easy on him and to try to get him mental help like a Psychitriast or psycholigist/a.k.a /a shrink it will probably get him some help

These people can only help themselves. Don't try and pound a square peg into a round hole.
