Why are so many kids on behavioral drugs?!

Question: Do they truly need them or is society too busy and/or lazy to deal with these kids properly?

My son has adhd, but isn't medicated. My husband and I work very hard to parent him appropriately and minimise the effect that the adhd has upon his life and ours. His school also works very hard with him so that his learning isn't affected.

Some children are very badly affected with their problems though and sometimes medication is required.

You shouldn't underestimate the effect that behavioural problems have upon both the child and the family. Most of those kids who're diagnosed are suffering very badly and medication can give them some normality back. You have to live with a behavioural disorder before you can judge. It's not all down to faulty parenting.

Also, adhd/add is a cognitive disorder that manifests itself through bad behaviour - it's not just about bad behaviour. My son had extensive cognitive tests to demonstrate this.

In some cases, medication is used as a (fairly ineffective) substitute for proper parenting and discipline.

In the majority of cases, however, the medicine is quite desperately needed to treat very real disorders, and its use is therapeutically appropriate.

terry g - the drug companies found a way to make more money by 'Labeling' normal behavior as problems and making a pill to cure it.

Parents aren't smacking their kids when they should be

people expect kids to be perfect these days...if they show 1 sign of ADHD, theyre on Ritalin. They figure it's ok until the kid has suicidal thoughts.

I am going to go with the fact that in today's society, everything can now be "fixed" with a pill. Your kid is hyper? Take this pill. Wont listen to you the first time you say something? Take this pill.

Kids are acting like kids..being rowdy and hyper and sometimes getting into trouble, not listening...and all of a sudden these last few years-they consider it a mental health problem?! WTF?! I was the same way when i was 7, and I didn't have ADD or ADHD or some other form of a chemical unbalance....I WAS BEING A KID.

Doctors today are too pill-happy. They prescribe antibiotics for everything-(which is why we now have all these HORRIBLE colds and flus going around and the staff infections-because all the viruses are becoming immune to the antibiotics due to them being prescribed for every little cough or sneeze) They are more than ready to write out that script for ritalin or anti-depressant. According to them-everyone is depressed and everyone has ADHD....and just incase-i heard a sniffle so lets throw in a penicillin on top of the zoloft and ritalin and any other drug they can think of.

Because some of today's ultra pc parents can't/won't discipline an unruly child. They don't accept responsibility for their brat's behaviour so they blame it on society or a medical condition and put their 'little angel' on drugs to brush their neglect under the carpet and create a false illusion.

they think they are cool.

Because it is the easiest way to control kids in school who are not particularly paying attention to their teachers. The psychobabble experts have managed to convince the school systems that the only way to help children learn is to drug them. this makes it easier to teach them what they want them to hear. Oh by the way terry the teacher's unions are all in favor of the psychologists. It means they don't have to try to figure out how to reach the children who seem resistant to learning. OOPPSS! Guess I sort of let it out that I don't really have much use for the Teacher's Associations, (isn't 'association' another word for UNION?

Just a guess....a lot of crap parents.
I always wonder why other countries don't have as many kids on them.

You nailed it, for the most part, it's a quick fix solution.

"If you can't educate, MEDICATE."

The real problem is that it's now nearly impossible to separate the kids who REALLY need drugs from every bored, whining, pseudo-depressed teen in the world.

We were depressed, bored, and whining too. But our laziness was fixed with a kick in the butt to get us going rather than an adjustment to brain chemistry.

so the drug co can make money

some need to be, some are just medicated because the parents are lazy.
