different anti-depressants have different side effects which usually only last a couple of weeks. ssri anti depressants are pretty common now and are based on increasing the body's seretonin levels in the brain which are thought to help contribute to depression.

before i went on mine i searched the net and looked up effects of different types and spoke to my shrink. talk to your doctor and explain the circumstances and your concerns, and search antidepressants on google and check out a few sites.

the more recent ones SSRI's are extremely difficult to od on and are often prescribed to suicidal patients, the drugs do not increase the chance of suicide, but get blamed for it because often after being on the right tabs at the right dose the thoughts haven't changed just that you are less exhausted and hence more likely.

i was on luvox for 3mths last year but they weren't working now i am on zoloft 250mg per day with epilim and they do raise your general mood. i've been on the zoloft for over 6mths.

Only as dangerous as Osama Bin Ladden NiGg

yeah, they are dangerous.

they are only dangerous if u plan on taking them. just laying around the house they usally dont do much damage.. although u can sometimes get those bad ones that will tear up ur carpet.

I have been taking them for 4 years now. They helped a lot and I didn't get any of the side effects. But ask your doctor since you are taking blood thinners.

no there not dangerous unless you overdose or take with other anti depressants at the same time. They also get affected by alcohol. I was on Paxil CR for anxiety attacks but was fine with blood pressure and other health issues.

they are very common...as long as you have them prescribed from your doctor.

yes they are very dangereous and very addictive and can make negitive side effects if u are not depressed it will make u depressed

Do you really need to take them, or just doing it for the high...

Think before you act... if you OD think about the people that will be left behind... your family for instance... think about them.

hmm ok well pros

- You feel better about yourself
- don't feel so stressed
- feel there is a point in life
- a point in living
- gives you hope life will get better
- generally it just offers a way out of a dibilitating illness

Cons
- excess sweating is probably the worst for me.
- potential dependance
- higher risk of self harm + suicide (espcially in teens)
- change in sleep patterns or dreams (although this is not always negative)
- Knowing you were not able to 'fight it' on your own.

Generally, I would say the pros totally outweight the cons though.

NO THEY R NOT DANGEROUS. iVE BEEN ON ANTiDEPRESSANTS SiNCE NOVEMBER. THE SiDE EFFECTS DEPEND ON THE ANTiDEPRESSANTS U TAKE....

If you are taking them under a doctor's supervision then things should be alright. Sometimes it take a couple of tries with different kinds of medication to find the one that works for your symptoms. I was on the wrong kind for 2 year and all it did for me was made me get fat and have no feelings at all, I felt dead inside. Now I'm on the right ones for me and I feel great. Like a whole new person.

yes there can be, especially in teenagers.
you should see your doctor. they can answer those questions. but anti-depressants save many peoples lives... but def. talk to your doctor. hang in there!!

Most anti-depressants are pretty harmless. But, you should make your decision only after talking with your Doc.

Yes they are dangerous. Certain types of anti depresents increase thoughts of suicide. It just makes you depression worse. Trust me.

No they are not dangerous. Thats why if your doctor says you need blood work to see what your medication levels are - so they can keep anything from going wrong.

There are many different kinds of anti-depressants. I've been through many myself, I would suggest not giving up on it. When I took some that worked I felt soo much better I can't tell ya. Finding one that works is worth it.

they can be... but if your doctor is watching over your treatment it is absolutely fine.
(*as long as you are complient with the meds*)

I think you need to think about this carefully. If you do not have a serious mental disorder or are suicidal, then meds are not the way to go.

A good therapist that will spend time working with you to cope with your issues and eventually work on them is the best way to go. Drugs only mask the problem, they don't solve anything. Good counseling and work on your part can provide a much better solution.

Antidepressants are not only dangerous to some, but they alter your thinking in a way that is worrisome. They can cause some nasty side affects which will have long term affects on your body.

Do your best to work on your problems and not rely on a pill.

Experts say antidepressant drugs cause suicides instead of preventing them. Pharmaceutical companies are greedy, they just try to sell happy pills to make people better. The only real solution is therapy, talk about why you feel sad.

anti-depresents and other drugs that effects cental nervous system are very dengerous drugs and need prescription from doctors and a follow up ,,, thay have many side effects, i advice u not to take them unless a pharmacist gave them to u and told u how to use them accuritly ,,

I think the Bad things people say are jack Shizz to be honest, I mean i bet you they are the one's that haven't had to go through such hard time's or THINK they went through a really tough patch and got through on their own just fine.
Well that means nothing to me, beacuse if it's something really hard for you then you can't get by on your own with your own thoughts. If Anti-Depressants were that bad for you then they'd take them away from people and stop perscribing them would they!
I bet you that you will feel so much better for taking them, Yeah there maybe other side effects like sweating said one person, but if thats what you get for feeling heaps better and maybe not even suisidal ect. anymore isn't it worth it?
I hope you feel better soon, and if you need them take them, thats what they have been perscribed for you.

I think they are only dangerous if people take them when they don't need them. If your depression is caused by a lack of seratonin in the brain or something, then you need the pills. If your depression is caused by a relationship break up, a short course can help lift you out of the rut so you are able to "get back on the bike." Like any pills, you shouldn't be on them if you don't need them. Like any pills, you should only take them on your doctor's advice, especially when taking other medication. It could be dangerous if they were not compatible with your other meds.
My mum is on anti-depressants, due to a lack of seratonin. She goes through phases where she feels better on them, and phases where she feels better off them. You might have better luck in finding something that suits you well.

Yes they are. Any chemical that alters awareness and perceptions and influences mind is dangerous. Cocaine, Zoloft, heroine, crack, Ritalin, Xanax, marijuana, Prozac have several things in common - they are mind altering drugs, they have serious side effects and they all cause addiction.

So to answer your question once again. Yes, antidepressants are dangerous and not good for you. Take lot of vitamins, exercises, visit your friends, do some cleaning around the house, go to cinema to see a nice movie and you will feel better. Just say NO to drugs regardless is they are being offered to you by a drug dealer on the street corner or by psychiatrist.

No there not

Dangerous in what way? When I saw your post I thought of a Van Wilder movie-life is dangerous, none of us will get out alive.

OK, in all seriousness I would say that the answer to your question depends on a number of things. Many of the old antidepressants, such as TCAs (Elavil, Pamelor, etc) and MAOIs, had many side effects, drug interactions and a narrow therapeutic window, which means it was a fine line between a therapeutic dose and one that can be toxic. This is much less common with the newer agents such as the SSRIs (drugs like Zoloft, Prozac), NSRIs (Cymbalta, Effexor) and novel (Wellbutrin, Remeron) antidepressants. These drugs are generally very safe, even in overdose. As one colleague told me, you have to work pretty hard to overdose on an SSRI and you are more likely to choke on the number of pills it would take than be poisoned by them. In general, antidepressants as a class have the following commonly reported potential side effects:
Headaches, upset stomach, anorexia, weight loss, weight gain, diarrhea, constipation, sexual dysfunction (anorgasmia), sedation, dry mouth, trouble urinating, teeth grinding and excessive sweating.

These are the more common potential side effects. Not everyone gets them and when they do they are often transient and disappear as the body gets used to the medication. Also, for those side effects that are annoying and don't go away, there are things that can be done to minimize or eliminate them. More serious, and rare, side effects include something called SIADH (a syndrome where your body doesn't hold on to sodium as it should), serotonin syndrome, seizures and induction of mania/hypomania. The risk of SIADH is very very low, I think there have been only a few case reports in all of the millions of scripts that have been written. Seizures tend not to be an issues with most antidepressants unless you have a preexisting history of epilepsy or you are taking Wellbutrin and have an eating disorder or alcoholism. Serotonin syndrome, a syndrome where the body has too much serotonin, can be very serious but is also very rare unless the antidepressant is used in combination with a drug that also works on serotonin. As for the last one, this relates to the use of an unopposed antidepressant on someone who has bipolar disorder. A thorough history and education on what to look for for those people without the diagnosis but believed to maybe at risk, usually significantly decreases this risk.

There has been some scuttle in the news about antidepressants and suicide. While there is some evidence to suggest that in some people there has been an initial increase in suicidal ideation, there have been no completed suicides associated linked to antidepressant use. In fact, there has been recent evidence to suggest that the rate nof suicide in children/adolescents has risen as the number of prescriptions of antidepressants written for that population has fallen.

You made mention of the issue of blood thinning and antidepressants. This is a reasonable concern. We think that because of the serotonin receptors on platelets, people on SSRIs may have a little more difficulty clotting. This tends not to be severe and could be eliminated, if a source of concern, by tapering off the medication before surgery.

And BTW, as for this alteration of consciousness stuff-that is nonsense. Everytime you have a thought you change the chemistry in your brain. Thats the reality of how the brain works. Vitamins and herbals, which some would promote, can be very dangerous in their own right. You've probably heard of arsenic, right? Well, thats a natural substance and its not all that safe, is it? Not all that is "natural" is safe and herbals in this country are very poorly regulated. A good multivitamin that has the recommended RDA equivalents will make sure your nutritional status is secured. Any advice about exercise is reasonable and certainly cannot hurt however the evidence as it applies to depression/anxiety suggests that this is only effective for mild to moderate cases.
Psychotherapy is also a nonpharmacological approach to treatment if thats a path you are interested in.
