It sounds like a good idea to me. I volunteered for a little while at a local riding stables, just helping mucking out (not much fun lol) and grooming them (which was). I certainly found it a great help for my depression at that time. I was never allowed any pets growing up either but now I have a house full of animals that I am looking after for friends, as well as my pet bunny, and they are better than any anti-depressant I have tried at cheering me up. It would also do you good to be out of the house doing something because keeping busy can help take your mind off things. Don't expect it to be an instant fix but it could certainly be a great help to you. In any case, if you tried it out and didn't enjoy it then there is no reason you can't stop, so long as you let them know that you don't want to continue volunteering. So no harm in trying. Good luck!

Walking the animals at the shelter is actually quite fun. My concern for you is how you would handle the fact that an animal you had been caring for was euthanized.

So my suggestion would be to volunteer at a no-kill shelter.

That sounds like a fantastic idea. Try it.

If you can find a no-kill shelter near where you are, I would suggest you give it a try. I worry about how you would take an animal being euthanized after you have tried to care for it. It is very depressing to lose a pet you care for no matter what kind of animal it is. I suggest you start by taking dogs for walks, then move up to cleaning cages, feeding the animals and moving up that way. Good luck.
