Psychiatrist depressed me?!

Question: Hi,
I just got released from a mental hospital (treated for bipolar) and went to see a psychiatrist on the outside. He said he wouldn't treat me because I was too suicidal and resentful and would become resentful toward him. When I said I wasn't resentful to the hospital psychiatrist, he said "wow how did he manage to accomplish that!" Then he said I would need at least 20 years of therapy and that I wasn't a candidate for his therapy. i feel so hopeless now - like a worm, way worse than when I went in his office. Does anyone have anything positive to say - anything at all will do.

OMGosh!!!!!!!!!! Does he have a supervisor? If so, have someone close to you report him for what he said to you. Don't you worry yourself about that though.

That is so awful, I am SO sorry, please don't let this keep you from seeking treatment.

The unfortunate truth is that sometimes people in the shrink field got into that field while dealing with their own psychoses. It sounds like you found a real dud, who has all of his own issues to sort through before he should even be in contact with other human beings.

DO NOT take ANYTHING he said literally. It is a bunch of bs that he was using to feel better about himself. Screw that. Just keep looking, you may have to try a few therapists before finding the right one.

A similar thing happened to me, I had to "try out" 3 therapists before finding the right one. I was having panic attacks, and the first one basically made me feel like it was my fault, and then kept talking about things that were stressful to me that I wasn't ready to talk about, which triggered more attacks! duh, lol

The second one I went to started telling me that a deceased relative was trying to "contact me". I politely sat through the session and then ran, lol.

You are not a worm. You are not hopeless. There is ALWAYS hope. God bless.

p.s. Also, maybe you can just see a psychiatrist for your meds, but get your real therapy from a psychologist (oftentimes psychologists will work with a psychiatrist and make recommendations for meds.) I found that therapists sometimes are a little more kind, or "soft" than psychiatrists. Maybe it's the medical doctor complex thing. Good luck!

get a new one
i had a counselor that told me how stuff was my fault and all

so yeah
just get a new one

I'm sorry to hear about that. Perhaps you should change your psychiatrist. You know, I suffered from years of depression. Sometimes I feel I know more about this illness than the people treating me. Maybe you are the same x

Find another psychiatrist who will be able and willing to help you.

Contrary to popular opinion, a lot of doctors are complete jerks - they're not God and sometimes they're quite useless.

Sometimes you just have to shop around. Don't blame yourself - perhaps he has 'issues' that he needs to resolve himself, or he's just bored with his job and can't bothered to treat you.

You'll have to start doing some phoning around to find another one.

Well... your not alone at all. For one.. i'm with ya. I'm depressed at the moment as well, and feel the same way you do, but we can't give up... we must show whoever it is that we're much better than they think.

What an asshat! Report him or something! Pray to God, ask for guidance in trying to find someone who can truly help.

See this site for natural help with depression. It starts out by telling about the book, LEARNED OPTIMISM. Read about the minister who was worse than you with bipolar, depression and anxiety. Now he is doing great and you can even look him up if you want to verify it. There is hope for you even if it is beyond your headshrink. Even in your darkest hour, I will not abandon you.

I had a Pshychiatrist tell my significant other that he should leave me because, he will have to live with my illness as long as he is with me. I am borderline personality disorder. I left his office in tears and the whole time he just a grin on his face. Find someone else and report him to the medical board.

That psychiatrist was extremely unprofessional. WOW. I can't believe he said that to you. What you need to remember is that everything is temporary. You will feel better soon. It WILL happen.

Can you find a counselor to talk to? Just a family/marriage sort of counselor will do. I find these kinds of therapists are a lot less clinical than psychologists and psychiatrists and are also a lot more caring. A really good one can help you work through issues while remaining kind and responsive.

Oh, I mean in addition to another psychiatrist to replace the jerk.

That psychiatrist should not even be practicing medicine. What a total Wan%er! You don't need his opinion. He is clearly very poor at his job and can't cope with anything that is beyond nappy level medicine. Write him off and find someone more helpful.

Bad doctor. go to another one and write a written complaint to the hospital he works for or medical board.

how are you old?everybody is bipolar don't wary be happy just be yourself try to find your own personal power remember ever thing is in your head help yourself and God will help you.
BE A FIGHTER

Hi Roo - is that like kangeroo or roo in Winnie the pooh. There are good plumbers and bad plumbers, good hair dressers and bad hair dressers, there are wanderful teachers and bloody awful ones and there are great psychiatrists and burnt out, arrogant, stupid ones and it sounds like you drew the short straw for the latter. Lets look at it this way - this person has an oppinion - its not aright oppinion or a wrong oppinion its just HIS oppinion. So having said that he sounds very negative and probably not posiitive enough or competenant enough to treat you. You are better off without his treatment and you are better off finding someone you feel really happy talking to.

Lets face it Roo if you felt depressed after 1 visit with this fellow how depressed would you feel with seeing this person 10 times or 20. My goodness you could just keep going down hill when the whole pint of seeing "professionals " is to feel better. don't be seduced into thinking that just because these guys/girls are doctors means they are extra special they are not - and some of these psychiatrists can become so engrossed in their work ( after all they are seeing total nutters all day long and I mean that in the nicest possible way. But these people see and hear things that would make your hair grey or greyer or even fall out!!) that they end up taking on the characteristics of their clients. They are often very isolated and have inflated egos and they have social problems in being able to communiacate to people. You imagine working with the very mentally ill for the 30 years and you do would start taking on some behaviours. Not to mention fragmented thought processes - the inability to keep their thoughts seperate this is largely caused by stress - extreme stress.

You sound like you really need a hip, younger, happy and positive person maybe two professionals - a psychiatrist and psychologist to balence you and give you lots of positivity. Good luck.

Douche-bag...is all I can say.

Get to another psychiatrist and I hope you are also seeing a counsellor regularly...meaning weekly! I hope on your release, weekly meetings were set up with psychologist, contact made for you with a social worker and regular monthly to every three month appts are being made with psychiatrist. That is the standard approach for good management of bipolar disorder.

As said before, some doctors are great, some are good and some are just downright dreadful, just like in any profession. Some just have no people skills.

A doctor should never leave you feeling less than; his job is to help you. But it happens. Try ratedoctors.com and you shall see, there are good bad and ugly out there.
