Mental illness used to not be recognized AT ALL. One was just considered crazy - I believe that due to newer studies, they are finding new diagnosis every day. Bipolar being one of them. The doctors probably just didn't know or understand it before.

I'm not!

your going INSANE!!!!!!!!!!! there is SERIOUSLY something wrong with your making yourslef look REAL bad by asking repetitve questions..then u get answers like mine which doesnt help u need to STOP!!! Please do it for me and everyone else here!! THANKS

They're trying to label EVERYONE as Bipolar. They tried it to me. It's the easy & lazy way out for doctors to make more money & make their jobs easier. I KNOW I'm not Bipolar! & they gave me Depakote, & it basically was slowly but surely destroying my body. The doctor I have now & doctors I've had before say I'm FAR from Bipolar, but 1 idiot doctor tried to label EVERYONE on his caseload as Bipolar.

more and more ppl are being labeled bipolar now instead of other conditions, more ppl aren't actually becoming bipolar, doctors r just diagnosing it differently

Because people take one poorly developed online test that says they have it, and they instantly think they have it.

Also, in teenagers, a lot of them don't understand they're SUPPOSED to be hormonal/emotional hurricanes. They read a list of symptoms on Wikipedia, relate to two or three of them, and are convinced they have it.

As for people who are actually DIAGNOSED with it... it's honestly not as common as it seems. The media blows it out of proportion. >_>

It's a new reason to get Social Security Disability. They thought I was making too much money so, now they can take a little more out of my check. I have to work harder and longer to make less money so we can pay these 'bipolar' people.

I was bi-polar when bi-polar wasn't cool (lol) It's finally out of the closet and on the front page and being talked about. Now finally people will have some compassion for people with this illness, which is more prevalent than you think!

it is crazy! guess what, i'm bipolar too, but i'm the original bipolars. i was diagnosed over 20 yrs ago. i don't even claim to be though, i have alot of problems with depression but i'm a fighter. if you take a good look at society you can see why everybody is "bipolar", actually sad if you think about it. people have no values, morals, discipine, structure, or any good foundations. therefore we have a bipolar society. Bipolar is chemical imbalance in the brain by the way. it can be induced by drugs or alcohol (alcohol being a drug)

Bipolar Disorder (BPD) is just more recognized now than in the past. There are different levels of BPD. Type I is the full blown mania and severe depression that has always been BPD. Type II is mostly depression with some hypomania and no mania. Type NOS (not otherwise specified) can be anywhere on the scale and is often used for children with BPD.
This is similar to sexual abuse in asking, was it not as rampant as in the past or are we just recognizing it more? There are many other examples of this.
