My MOODY Friend...?!

Question: I have a "friend" who is incredibly moody. He says he is happy, but his face and demeanor says otherwise. He is proned to quick-tempered responses; and is very much an eye-for-an-eye type of person. The other 50% of the time he is calm and easy going, even fun and funny sometimes. He's in his early 40's. Does this sound like depression, or a disorder? Or is it a grumpy man? Your thoughts?

With a "friend" like him, who needs enemies?
No, but seriously, those sound like wild mood swings. I'm not a doctor but it sounds like there is something wrong with him.
Part of the problem is also that men we don't usually like to go to doctors until we are ready to die because we don't want to face problems, we don't want to look out of control, etc. Therefore, getting him to go for professional help might not be easy, if possible. It sounds like he needs to go for professional help like NOW.

He's not happy about something in his life. Maybe he has grown more cynical as he has gotten older.

It's never easy to try and get to the bottom of the way someone is feeling when they say nothing is wrong. Do you think he could be under any undue stress? Sometimes people try their best to hide it, but it affects their mood to a degree. Just a suggestion though.
Is this a sudden change in him, or has he always been like this? He could just be a grumpy beggar! :-)
Mood swings with highs and lows can indicate depression, but without knowing him and not being able to talk to him it is impossible to say.
If he has any worries, money, relationships, etc, this could also be impacting on his mood. Just my take on it anyways.
