Finding it hard to cope with my ASD child, nothing that?!

Question: used to work to help him cope with his stress and fears seems to work anymore. I'm all out of ideas!

I have a 9 year old who has a high functioning ASD and life can be really tough and monotonous with her. I think you need extra help with your child after school. If the school are really good and coping well with him you need some sort of respite when he is at home. You ought to get yourself a carers assessment from your local authority. The carers assessment is an assessment of your needs in looking after your child and not your child's needs. You can get a variety of different people to help you with this form, you can ask your own GP, the school nurse, the SENCO at school or a welfare worker or a social worker if your son has one. The outcome of the carers assessment could be that your son would get some hours in respite or he could spend time at an after school club. The carers assessment looks at your welfare and not that of your son. In the meantime does your son have any special interests as it could be worth getting involved in these to help take his mind off his other behaviours. If all else fails go and see your doctor and tell him how you feel and how worried you are. You know your son best and must do everything you can to help him to get the best support available, (I know it is easier said than done). Don't give up on him and try to find new ways of coping with his fears and anxieties. I wish you all the best.

Can you be more specific what problems you are having? I assume you mean your child has Autism (autistic spectrum disorder?) what is it that stresses him and makes him scared...>>>>

i feel for you, my son has ASD, and he, like most ASD children, has significant difficulties in social situations. my son is in school but his teachers have set him up a 'quiet corner' where he can go if he is finding the classroom too noisy or stressful.
Visual prompts might be a help if he is having difficulty expressing why he is feeling strsssed or upset, ie, simple pictures with a angry, tired, upset face etc. or symbols meaning too loud, bright, busy etc. etc. these methods work well for my son, athough all ASD children are different, it wouldn't hurt to try.

Also, no matter how much you feel you must do in the day, try and have a little time just to yourself, whether its a bath in peace, resting with a book, whatever recharges your batteries. A happy mum is a happy child. good luck x x x

Shame, I read that as "ADSL child" ... now 'that' , would be awesome..

Hi!
You have given us so little information to work with that I am not sure where to start.
Is he on a special diet, medication?
Are you part of a support group?
Where is he placed in class with regard to the teacher , classroom door etc?
Lastly, (and I don't mean this in a criticising way, as all sorts of factors are involved with school placement)if he is so highly stressed why is he not in a special ed classroom or school?
I work in a school that was set up because the owner's autistic son was being rejected by other schools, so I can understand where you are coming from and I would like to help if I can but not knowing either of you I need much more info.

maybe u should write out what he is going to be doing for week and the show him if something would to come up let him know ahead of time then it wouldnt be war with him.if he has good behavior that whole week without a war or outburst then treat him with a toy of his choice or take him some where he feels welcomed or out to dinner.rent movie but he has to have no outburst or wars in the morn.but if u change something dont do it all right that very sec or u will have a war.

get in touch with your health visitor or social services then he can be assessed and hopefully helped?
