I've been tired for years. Does anyone have any advise on how to wake me up?!

Question: I've felt extremely tired for literally yrs. Everytime I get up to clean or do anything I get hit with an overwhelming tired feeling. It's not fun and I don't know what's wrong with me. I have 3 kids & I know that my being tired all the time effects them tremendously. I keep a horrible house because of it & I don't spend as much time playing with my kids as I'd like to. I'm only 21: my kids are 3 1/2, 21 months, & 2 months. They're all from the same dad (I have no idea why he puts up with me, must really love me, huh?) I have a wonderful 3 bedroom home, I'm a stay at home mom, I have two running vehicles. I've considered that I may be depressed, but I don't know why I would be? I've been tired like this off & on since I was 12 yrs old. I'm still skinny, despite being so lethargic that I don't do much...I also have a weird state of mind,it almost feels like I'm living in a dream...like nothing's real. Please help, I want to be the best wife & mom I can be. So I need to wake up.

I just had a doctors appointment to adress this same issue. They have been telling me its just depression for years, and I will not take that anymore, because the depression meds have done absolutely nothing for my energy. I can still fall asleep anywhere doing anything, and at times sleep for 24 hours straight. I have tried eating healthy every vitamin in the book, working out, getting more sunlight ect..I have basically tried everything including self medicating which is dangerous and bad I know, but i wasnt getting the help i needed. My doctor finally is signing me up for a sleep study. I told him everything. I have sleep paralysis episodes where when I am trying to fall asleep its like my mind wakes up but my body doesnt. I can move my eyes but nothing else. It almost feels like there is something sitting on my chest. Its absoultely the most terrifying experience and it is awful. I am pretty sure I have cataplexy but not totally sure. If I do its mild. I have the autonomic sleep thing where I am sleeping but doing daily activities. ie I will be at home then all of a sudden I am at work and I have absolutely no idea how the hell i got there, even though i drove myself, I just cant remember. like I blacked out or something. I have extreme exhaustion at times. Its like I cant help it I just fall asleep. These are all symptoms of freking NARCOLEPSY!!! Its totally not like what they porteay in the movies. Google it!!! My doctor put me on a drug called provigil until the sleep study. It kinda helps. It keeps you awake, but not jittery. Unfortunately my 7 day free trial ran out and my new script of 30 200mg pills would cost me at least 281$ because I have no insurance coverage for prescriptions. Guess its back to the drawig board. Dont let the doctors blame everything on depression. Im not sayin that you are or arent I am just saying that it could be and sounds like something else! I have been at this for 7 years now and am just now finally getting answers! See the doctor and tell him whats going on, no matter how crazy it sounds. If that doctor doesnt believe you then seek another doctor who will listen to you. I quit a few years ago because I told a doctor about the sleep paralysis( I didnt know what its name was then I just knew it scares the hell outta me) and he basically told me that I am a hypochondriac....thats total bull. I almost feel like suingfor malpractice because I could have really gotten hurt or hurt someone else due to this. Now I am not totally for sure it is narcolepsy, but I have a feeling and I am relieved because it means that no I am not freaking crazy! Get a physical. Have them do a thorough check on your thyroid and iron levels. If thats all normal then see about the sleep study! Good Luck! Sorry this was so long I am just totally excited to be getting somewhere!

sounds like you may be very depressed, usually called deep depression... depression is not usually caused by one or more things that have happened although they may trigger these feelings. Depression is really a chemical in balance in your brain, sometimes it can be that your brain isn't producing enough serotonin.. but I am a little worried that you may be over producing melatonin.. the hormone that makes you tired...
I really think that you should go to the doc and explain all of this, if they can't help you have them recommend someone that can...
Also there are other medical things that it could be, some levels in your blood may be off, or your thyroid could be under active (although it's unlikely you'd still be skinny with this)...
I hope things get better for ya, just knowing you want to be a great wife and mommy- makes it even more possible. :)

P.S. is there a chance that after having the kids that you felt more like this?... it could now also be postpartum depression...

Might be stress, depression or chronic fatigue syndrome. I'd suggest you get a complete medical check-up (blood tests and all) done to reveal any health problems like hormonal ones. You can then decide to see a cognitive behavioural therapist. I'm seeing one and it's helped me tememendously!

have you ever had mono? because once you get it the anitobodies or whatever stay in your body. you can forever pass your mono on. your symptoms maybe temporary..but you will always have it. but for some...like ME. once i got mono four years ago i stayed tired. i dont do any sports...i always want to sit down i think other people look at me as so lazy. but its the mono. check with your doctor!
