How can you overcome compulsive behavior without just replacing your addictions?!

Question: A cognitive apporoach, as tim describes, is one way. Due to the fact that it is usually classified as a phyciatric disorder, one would have to change their way of thinking. The first step, usually, is to gain some help or insight from a therapist or psychologist/psychiatrist. A lot of times there are specific cognitive treatments in order to address these issues. Cognitive behavioral therapy, for one. Additionally, you can replace your compulsive behavior with other behavior... Otherwise know as competing behavior. Except, you might want to be a compulsive runner or compulsive gum chewer... something more positive if you are simply trying to eliminate a behavior.

If you are trying to eliminate your compulsive personality, you might want to get some outside help (to give you some strategies) from a therapist... possibly medication, too!

Some strategies, though, for people with OCD and compulsions is to video tape yourself or and watch it. In the behavioral literature, viewing or watching yourself engage in these behaviors is the first step to treating them...
