Emotional block?or bad memory?!

Question: OK im just wondering what you phycologists out there have to say about this situation.

Im 17 and my parents split up when i was around 5 i think.Thing is i cannot seem to remember him being there one day and the next day him not being there.

I do have quite a bad memory anyway so..But like i can remember some times when he was there and sometimes after when he wasnt so im just wondering do you think i blocked it all out emotionally?

Is that even possible?
ICould it just be my bad memory?
Will i remember it one day?

Thankyou,in advance

Our brains are fasicating because they do block trauma, the thing is, it usually isn't permanent. What happens is, we find we remember things later in life, when we are better able to deal with them.

I doubt if you will have really clear memories of your father since he was only in your life a short time, but at a very important time too.

Some people think that if you get hypnotized, that will help with blocked memories. I am not 100% convinced, but I do think it has some validity.

It's possible that the break up didn't happen in an overnight kind of way. Sometimes it takes people a few months to break up. He may have stayed away for a night, and then on another occasion for a few nights, and then another time for a week... So maybe it wasn't how you imagine it. Maybe it wasn't a case of having your father there one day and not there the next.

I think it's interesting that you want to remember more about it. Can you talk about it to other people in your family? Maybe they can shed some light on it for you.

For the record, I don't think hypnosis helps with memory. It's tempting to believe in the 'memories' that emerge during hypnosis, but I don't think they're any more reliable than dreams, and we all know how factually flawed dreams can be!
