For those who have experienced high/severe anxiety?!

Question: How long did it take you to feel better when you on medication? How long did it take you to find the right one? I took lexapro and had horrible side effects and today I have an appointment to speak with my doctor about finding another med but I am scared. Any experience or advice would be appreciated. Thanks : )

I agree with Emma about Prozac; I had no serious side effects from it, but it does take a few days before it starts to become effective, and a week or two before being fully effective. It helped lessen my depression almost immediately, and that in itself helped relieve my anxiety, and helped me to realize that I was going to be okay. I don't know if Prozac on its own would be prescribed for anxiety rather than depression, but for me at least, the two seemed to go hand in hand. The more depressed I was, the more anxious I felt, and the more anxious I was, the more depressed I became. I believe the medication helped break that cycle. Counseling helped me to realize that I wasn't going crazy and that I was not alone , and even helped me to see that I had friends and family who cared.

Well I was admitted to a hospital for an eating disorder. They forced me to eat which caused EXTREME anxiety. First they put my on prozac for my depression which helped so much. The only side effect it had on me was minor teeth grinding at night. Also for the anxiety I would suggest ativan. It caused no side effects and all you do is dissolve it under your tongue. It works within 20-30 minutes! Good luck hun!

Finding the right medication for anxiety or any other mental illness can take some time. Many of the medications have side effects, but after a certain period of time (usually 2-3 weeks) the side effects disappear and you can start to feel better. However, you may have to change your dosage or the medication several times before you find the right one. It's a frustrating process and a lot, if not all, of my clients experience this. But, you will find a medication that is the best for you, in time.

Be honest with your doctor and let him know all of your side effects as well as what you are sharing here. He will respect your feelings and your needs.

I have very high anxiety. Lately I have been suffen panic attacks. I get nausea when this happens and I hate it. I don't take meds though.I relied on my firends to help me. They all try and my me feel better about myself. I would turn to your friends and family. Just talk to them and see if they can help you figure out what your anxiety is about.
