Question: the whole "pro-ana" campaign.i have nothing against annerexics. my sister, who is also a rely close friend of mine has suffered from it. yeah she allmost died she had it so bad. and i understand it cant be controlled its a disease. but does anyone else get the feeling some of the girls in the campaign are attention seeking?because when my sister (and a few other close friends) suffered from it. they completely and utterly denied that they had it. they just did not and could not believe they had it, the thought they were fat and worthless.and isnt that the disease?to think your fat and not realize how skinny you are?not know you are freakishly thin and go around telling everyone that you are and the ways you made yourself like that. arent they meant to think they are huge, gross and worthless. not know they suffer from it?

Many anorexics are aware that they have a problem, though that does not stop them being in denial about how ill they are. It is true that often the anorexic will see herself as fat when she is not, but some are aware that they are not fat. It is more that the need to lose weight takes over from everything else, no matter how much weight you lose it is not enough. you would feel better if you just lost a little bit more. This is my experience anyway with friends and my own ED, though I have never actually been severe enough to be classed as anorexic.

I think the pro-ana campaign started as a posotive thing. It was more about people with anorexia comforting, supporting and sharing with each other than anything. Now though it seems to have moved in a direction where on at least some sites, it actively encourages extreme weight loss etc. I can understand why someone with anorexia would be attracted to that, after all they could find a new way to lose weight, competition could drive them on to lose more, keep them motivated. All these things can be something you see in a posotive light when you are ill, because they all will help you lose the weight that you see as too much. Also, other people congratulating you when you have lost weight must feel better than people shouting at you for the same reason. I don't think it is really attentiont seeking, at least that is not it's sole purpose, though I am sure it is a secondary gain of the sites.

Personally, I looked at a few of these sites when I was ill last year. They made me feel worse, so I avoided them after that. I can understand how they appeal to an unhealthy mind but not to one that wants to get better. The sad fact is though that anorexia can take over to the point that 'getting better' seems more like failure and therefore becomes undesirable. This is just my take on it though.

its not nice is it.
pro ana sites i mean.

I don't think that it's attention seeking as much as it's part of the disease process. Yes...they do deny they are anorexic because when they look in the mirror all they see is a fat person. They don't realize how skinny they are which is why the disease is so hard to control because it's a vicious cycle. The more the person feels like they're fat and worthless...the more they starve themselves. The cycle keeps going until they either get help or death.

Maybe the girls on pro-ana are crying out for help? who knows anorexia is a terrible illness, and it is hard to recover from, but using a pro anorexia site cannot help?

they are seeking attention, most of the girls on those websites WANT to be anorexic and are there for info and tips!
