My child punches himself in the face when he is upset. Should i seek psychologic!

Question: I caught my 14 year old son punching himself repeatedly in the face today with full force. Leaving his face bruised and red. He also kept banging his wrists against a piece of furniture. He was upset because i put him on punishment after i got a bad report from school. When I told his mother about him punching himself she said it wasn't the first time and she's seem him do it before. Should i take him for a psych evaluation?

Talk to him first and see what he is feeling when he does this...It may be that he is angry and frustrated and takes it out on himself instead of dealing with it in a more constructive way. He might need to find a better outlet to release that anger. You and his mother need to sit down with him and talk about it..He is fourteen years old, and obviously going through alot of changes. If you and his mother feel that there is some pretty deep problems, then yes, get the evaluation. But don't just spring it on him....Talk to him first and let him know that this isn't a healthy outlet for him to pursue and that he needs to find another way to deal with what he is feeling and that you want to help him find that option.

Yes.

YES!

The kid needs some help. Now.

yes

Banging of limbs or head usually mark advanced tourretts syndrome or i believe problems in the hippocampus. You should definitely see a doctor.

Yes. He is obviously being irrational to the point of physically hurting himself. Severe irrationality seems to be something that doesn't seem "normal."

either he has brain damage or he is emo(emotiona) and he does need help if hes emo hes dealing with depressing factors in his life

His mother should have informed you and an appointment should have been made immediately. Yes, please take him to get him help, before he harms himself even more or tries to harm another. You just never know.

I agree with Mp completely... great advice!
