What kind of hospital do you go to when you have an eating disorder?!

Question: I told my boyfriend in Iraq- and I'm away at college about my weight and he called my mom and dad and my 2 brothers and now everyone's coming down here. I really don't want to go to the hospital and have to stay there. Do they have outpatient things you can go to? Will I have to stay?

You usually would get sent to a rehab type facility at first, for probably six weeks, if they decide to send you, but if you get better fast and work hard, and want to get better you will get out fast then you would have outpatient work, but usually you would be in patient at first.

It depends on which disorder you suffer from. If your life is endangered, then of course you will likely be expected to stay, for a while, at least until they stabilize your physical health. There are outpatient programs, and most are run by the psychiatric department.

For eating disorders, one is usually sent to a hospital with a mental health facility. Eating disorders are usually considered a mental illness and depending on the severity of the disorder will determine whether the services will be in-patient or out-patient. In most cases, one will be in-patient for 2 to 10 day (maybe more) and then they are referred to out-patient therapy. If you do have an eating disorder, do whatever it takes to correct it! Your family is not making this trip only to see you die. Do it for your boyfriend, apparently he loves you very much and wants to be with you once he returns from Iraq. Go with the flow girl, because you are LOVED!

I was in for 10 days (a mental health hospital). Once out, I had outpatient therapy once a week. They did offer group therapy to me 5 days per week but I live an hour away and the distance was a big problem. You have to really be focused on getting better because if not, you're going have a hard time going inpatient. For me, they watched me eat three meals a day and I wasn't aloud to go to the bathroom without a nurse standing there watching me and she had to be the one to flush the toilet (I was bulimic). The group discussions are very interesting too but to be honest, I learned even more "tricks" to lose weight by the time I got out of there. I wasn't ready and was forced by my family at that time. It was awful. However, later, I dropped down to a very low weight and "I" decided it was time to get well. So, I admitted myself back in and now am in recovery. Best of luck to you.
