Alcoholism/rehab/therapy?!

Question: Is there a way to put a family member into a program to get them therapy and clinical help against their will? This family member does not want help, is in total denial, and I am worried they will die.

Is this possible in some way? Or does an addict have to voluntarily seek help?

I'm a recovering alcoholic/addict. The answer is no, in fact AA members will not try to bring someone in that is not "ready". The traditions state its a program of attraction, not promotion. The only way you can force someone into any type of facility is if they are a danger to themselves or others. Specifically threatning suicide. Then most states require a 3 day mental health hold. The only voluntary option you have is to call your local AA hotline, tell them the situation. If the person is willing just to "listen" to another alcoholics story AA will send a member on whats called a 12 step call. They will NOT tell the person they are alcoholic or guess if they are. They will only tell their story, what happened to them and how they found help in AA. They will then ask the person to possibly look at the similarities in the story and not the differences, and ask if they would like to go to a meeting with the person or would like a copy of the big book of AA. If they don't, thats it, the person will kindly leave. The first step of AA is "we admitted we were powerless over alcohol and our lives had become unmanageable". You cant decide that, the person does. BUT, you can attend Alanon which is for friends and family of alcoholics/addicts. That program is about living and dealing with an alcoholic/addict whether they are in recovery or not.

Listen, I told you I don't have a problem I can stop anytime I want!

depends what this person is on!!!!
lol me and my pointless answers

I worked in a drug and alcohol rehab and:
1. They won't take someone against their will and
2. It won't do a damn bit of good. They'll either leave before they're supposed to, or cause trouble.
I have a lot of hope for addicts, it's not that, it's just that I've learned that unless they want it, it's no good.
Besides, alcohol detox is hellish, and there's no use in making someone go through it just to go back to drinking.

You could try an intervention.
