Thoughts or reactions?!

Question: I'm a soft-spoken, somewhat shy person but am trying to come out of my shell a little around a few coworkers. Simply adding a comment to a conversation is a big step for me. So today, as a conversation was going on, I asked an incredibly obvious question and was made aware of it. Then I felt totally embarrassed. I could tell I was blushing but couldn't think of what to say. In my head I told myself, "OMG, that really was a dumb thing to say." But I just remained quiet, then smiled in embarrassment and sunk my head in my shoulders. Everyone around me giggled and I couldn't make eye contact so I continued to smile at the table.

What are your thoughts about how I reacted?

I am sorry you were met with such sarcasm while trying to be more outgoing and extroverted. It is a shame your coworkers were not willing to be more understanding and accepting - you certainly deserved far more than what you were given.

That being said, I do believe you reacted as most people would have if placed in a similar situation. Could you have reacted differently? Yes. But does that mean you were wrong in your reaction? Absolutely not.

Try to be gentle with yourself for the rest of the evening. And please do not give up on trying to be more open around people. We all have social gaffes here and there - it just makes us human. Live and let live, live and learn, and...most importantly...just live.

Good job for reaching out and being willing to do something different. You will get to where you want to be in due time. Until then, just trust yourself and continue to be willing, accepting, and honest.
