When will I stop throwing up?!

Question: I have been bulimic since my junior year in college (1991). I go to a psychiatrist, counseling, and I am on meds! Nothing seems to help. Am I going to keep doing this til I am old and gray?

You will probably continue to do this until you can learn to accept yourself for who you are faults and all not who you think you should be. I feel eating disorders are like cutting etc. a form of punishment to yourself because you do not like yourself. Try to embrace your faults as a part of you, no one is perfect or likes everything about themselves, that is just a part of life. I use to throw up, take laxatives, and physically pick at myself similar to cutting until I just stopped one day and decided I was going to accept me for me. I was tired of hating myself then doing these things, which in turn make you hate yourself more. You have to gain control of your life again. it is very hard to do, but I cant tell you how much happier I am and I still don't like a lot about myself but I feel I am free from the guilt/hurt yourself cycles. And I take it one day at a time. I also went off my anti-depressants (after talking to my doctor) and I feel good about that. I also stopped drinking for the most part which really helped a lot. I was never fortunate enough to be able to afford counseling. Listen to what they say, or perhaps you need a new psychiatrist to help you overcome this, but the bottom line is you have to make a choice and have the will power to stick to your choice, as with anything else in life, you are in control of you, or at least you were at some point in your life. Reclaim that control.

just dont do it?

Quit doing it.
Make the decision and do it.
You have to be strong.
Grab life by the cajones.

Ok so you're bulimic and you're on meds and been to see people, but do you want to stop? You have to want to stop.

you probably won't live that long....

Psychiatrist, counseling, meds...... and you think someone on YA is going to be able to answer when?

You don't have to keep throwing up until you are old and gray. You need to work hard and closely with your counselor and psychiatrist. I know people who were bulimic for a very long time and have since recovered. Just continue to work hard at getting well and I am sure that you will get there. Best wishes XOXO

Try reading the book "Brainswitch out of depression" by A.B. Curtiss. It is written for depression, but I think it is applicable to overcoming other mental health problems as well.

hi,the only way youre going to stop is up to you. you have to find the will to stop binging and purging.keep taing your meds and resist the urge to stick those two fingers down your throat after youve eaten something, have faith and keep saying to yourself "i can do this " over and over again. i know its going to be hard but you yourself are the only one who can help yourself from this terrible affliction.keep on praying that you will get better and i will too.good luck!

You have to realise what you want to choose...
your life, which you can be successful in and live to the fullest.
or
a life that will most likely end up being based around throwing up, going to hospitals, and avoiding going out with friends etc.

Obviously stopping isn't that easy, but knowing what you reallly want more, is the first step.

all the best
