You never really know for sure. It may be suspected and treated, but there is no way to really know.
Usually there are tests run by a certified doctor... depression, for example, shows you have a chemical imbalance. Do you feel you need to check in with a doctor to be checked?
There are so many different ones, and their symptoms vary greatly that it would be hard to say, "This is definitely how you tell..."

If you have a chemical imbalance (nuerotransmitter imbalance) you will experience different symtoms depending on what sort of imbalance you have. You may be low in one neurotransmitter such as seritonin or several such as sertonin, norepinephrine, acetylcholine, dopamine, GABA etc.

Also you may want to look into, EPA - an omega 3, inositol, or other supplement with some good research behind it before trying a pharmacuetical but it is ultimately up to you and your Dr., but mostly of course you.
