Should a professional psychiatrist make judgments regarding substance abuse.?!

Question: First visit for my realitive and at first it seemed to go well but later when I had to call concerning a problem with the medication prescribed things seem to go downhill. Everyone knows about the abuse problem and I thought knew the patient is trying to relieve horrible symptoms himself. Doctor's advice was followed concerning medication but I'm not sure if I should keep the patient going or if the patient even will continue now.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor as well as a psychiatric therapist. They have years dealing with substance abuse, alot of their patients are there due to substance abuse. A psychiatrist is a person who's really able to deal with the issue. Why are you in the middle of the situation any way?? Are you their health care proxy?? IF not the situation should be left between the doctor and that patient. You weren't in the room when the session was going on and you don't know what was said. Unless you have a recording of the session you don't really know what was said and you shouldn't try to get into the middle you might do more harm than help.

You're question is slightly confusing. But yes, psychiatrists do have the right to make judgments and decide the best treatment for substance abuse. They spend years in studying the subject.

It's their job to make judgements. That's why you need to see them in the first place.

all drugs will change all other drugs... thats just how that works.. if someones doing street drugs, script drugs wont help because the try to self medicate.( im guillty too ) if you really want to be better, you know you have to get off the illegal drug ( only till docs ok it, but long as a doc wont ok it, then get off it) and tell doc your kickin... go from there...

Psychiatrists should absolutely have a say when it comes to substance abuse. Taking drugs has an affect on your psychological state, not to mention the side affects it can create if there is a conflicting of the drug and any prescriptions the person is on. Always be honest with your doctor. It's important and can prevent a serious interaction.

It is illegal if the doctor do not say yes. That is the idea with the doctor.

When it comes to drugs that needs an prescribsion, it is not allways that the doctor get it right. If you have good arguments, the doctor could change. The doctor may not have all information.
