Getting over fear of flying..???!

Question: Ok, my husbands' aunt wants to take us on a week long trip to Walt Disney World this summer while the kids are on their break. She is getting ready to book the flight and hotel rooms and has already told the kids we are going and they are going to see giraff's outside the hotel window.. Thing is I am deathly affraid of heights and the thought of flying literitly makes me light headed.
Last year she took my son to MS and while waiting for their flight to take off I started getting dizzy thinking of watching the plane take off. I have to brace myself to stand on a 6 foot ladder so I don't know how I will ever take to the flight other then to drink before hand to calm my nerves.
I don't like closed in spaces either. How can I TRY to get over my fear long enough to sit threw the flight?
Thank you in advance.

I am a retired Air Force Pilot. The one statistic I always found fascinating was the fact that more pilot are killed driving to the airport then while flying. In an airplane you have no sensation of altitude. It is not like standing on a ladder or going to the top of a tall building. You are sitting in a semi-comfortable chair with a window next to you. Yes you are high up in the sky but when you look out the window it looks like a TV set. You get no feeling of height or speed. The only thing that is odd is the noises the airplane makes while taking off or landing. There are whirs, thunks, engine noise, and finally your ears popping or needing popping.

You are going to be sitting in a crowded long skinny room. There will be about 100 people in it. The ceiling is about 7 1/2 feet high. The airplane has enough fuel on board to take you somewhere between 500 and 1000 miles farther than you plan on going. That is for safety of flight. Most airline pilots have over 10,000 hours of flying time. They know what they are doing. Bring a good book to read. Just enjoy the flight, burying your head in the book, relax and think about Disney World. I promise you it is not a bad experience, as my Jewish Mother used to say "Try it, you'll like it!".

Xanax. But really flying isn't that bad. You'll be with your family and your going for them. There are breathing a relaxing techniques you can do to help calm you. If you need go to you doc before hand and ask what you can do. I have an anxiety disorder and i've learned ways to cope. You can to.

Flying is the safest form of transportation staticaly. I would not look out if any windows and sit in the isle seat. Bring something you can focus on like a book or something

I would say that you go to your doctor and ask him for a perscription for when you fly. I'm not sure what its called but i think the first answer got it up there lol. Anyway it puts you to sleep for the plane ride and when you wake up you'll be there.

I have never been on a plane before but trust me, me and my mom had the chance to go to Italy but we been putting it off because of her fear of flying. Just go and enjoy yourself, it will definatly be worth it =)

They have pills for everything, a valium would help ya. Also, try looking at the wonder of flying, Its more dangerous driving a car or walking across a street and the sights can be something of wander. Most fears if looked at properly can be overcome. Remember its all in the mind.
