Autism??There is a 3 year old daughter of a friend whom I think could be autisti!

Question: She doesn't talk. She has an intelligent face. She has jerky movements when she walks and seems to go through little play rituals and some eye contact but very little and couldn't seem to grasp the concept of filling a bucket with sea water at the beach and tried to drink the seawater. Also not toilet trained but does point at things like a plane in the air or a person for instance and babbles a bit and seems to zero in on stuff like mucking with the sand without trying to make a castle even when encouraged. Could this little girl be autistic??? She is not in any play groups at the moment and hasn't had any sort of evaluation and has just turned 3.

She could be a lot of things... there may be a developmental disorder.
Autism is less common in girls but not unheard of. If she has a family doctor that is where the identification process would begin. See if the parents have kept up with her medical stuff... and if they have asked about normal development....If this is Autism early intervention is a huge asset....
Autism is becoming more and more common in north America. A gentle hint or 2 to your friend might be in order. Good Luck

keep her away from the windows

she could be but she needs to be diagnosed by a medical professional, not a group of strangers on yahoo answers.

She sounds like she does have some type of development problem. Encourage her parents to have her tested for any problems.

It's probable. She should be tested.

i am very autistic, by the sounds of it maybe, but i think it could just be natural 3 year old behaviour.
doubt aspergers, possibly add/adhd.

she could be or she needs time. maybe she should be put in a playgroup to interact with the same age children. uk in the movie the messanger well she could be like that boy he points to stuff but doesnt talk cause he was scared cause he was in a car accident.

She could be autistic. But she could be a lot of things, including just needing a bit of time spent with her. Unless her parents get her evaluated though it is all just speculation. I don't think her parents will thank you for pointing out that you think their child is 'different' though, so unless you want to put their friendship on the line don't say anything! If and when they realise she is different they will need your support. Just be there for them then.

She could be. Or it could be almost anything. These sorts of things have to be diagnosed by professionals.

What you have to understand is that there's a whole range of autism. Some people can't function. Some people with autism become engineers. Then there's Asperger's Syndrome, which is like autism, but generally not as bad (and actually in some ways advantageous).

If she is autistic, she may do better with care from people who know what they're doing. However, it's not like there's any cure or anything.

Here's the screening guide lines from the link:

# No babbling by 12 months.
# No gesturing (pointing, waving goodbye, etc.) by 12 months.
# No single words by 16 months.
# No two-word spontaneous phrases (not including echolalia) by 24 months.
# Any loss of any language or social skills, at any age.

she could be, but what are you going to do, tell her mother? I wouldnt open that can of worms. She wont thank you for it. If the mother is worried, she will sort it out herself. She may just be young for her age. Not every child develops at the same rate. If shes not at play group and an only child she could be a little slow. Maybe you could suggest her going to play group, but dont suggest that she is autistic just because she doesnt tick all the boxes.
