What sets depression apart from simply "feeling down"?!

Question: When you're feeling down, you just can't be bothered to do anything for a short while then it lifts.

Whereas depression is a more continual feeling of being worthless, not fitting in, not really being sure why you're still here and pottentially things like suicidal thoughts.

There are for sure similarities between them, but if you feel like that several times a day and never really see why anyone would want to care about you being here or not, and things like that then it's more likely clinical depression.

Kindof hard to explain sometimes as it doesn't really feel like anything else that most people go through day to day. A bit like trying to explain just how painful childbirth is to a guy....we don't have anything to directly compare it against.

Nothing. Most of us use the word to mean all sadness from mild to severe depression.

maybe you meant clinical depression vs normal depression. It really depends on1. Duration 2. Severity 3. Frequency 4. Associated sympttoms (like psychosis, mania or suicality) 5. Impairment of function. Meaning depression is normal except if it last more than 2 weeks, becomes more frequent, becomes severe that you can't work the way you used to etc. Its pretty much like headache we all get but if it is so severe, frequent, long and you feel other things then you have to see your doctor,

I have depression and have suffered with it for years. Everyone 'feels down' from time to time but if this 'down' feeling persists, you may indeed be suffering from depression. There are too many ways you can get help with this to continue to suffer.
To answer your question, depression is prolonged feelings of sadness that does not go away. Left untreated, it can have major effects on your activities of daily living.
Please seek medical attention if these feelings persist.
Exercise helps me; getting out in the sunshine. Walking, sitting on the porch, playing or talking with my grandchildren. Forcing myself to stay involved instead of just going to bed with the covers over my head which is what I really want to do.
And I am on some medication for it. Which helps.
Hope you can find something that helps you, God bless you.

I'd imagine that the difference is that when you're feeling down it's a temporary sensation whereas being depressed is long term (you never snap out of feeling down). There are a bunch of symptoms that come with depression that you wouldn't normally go through if you were just feeling down - i.e. irritability, pain, trouble sleeping/sleeping too much, withdrawing from all your friends and family, suicidal thoughts, feeling worthless all the time, losing interest in your favorite hobbies.

I've felt down before and depression is a whole other ball game....it sucks so bad. It's like you're always down from the minute you wake up and it just keeps getting worse as the day goes on.

depression is a chemical being released in ur brain that makes you sad after something like a tramatic experience, also usually when someone is "feeling down" they don't feel like killing themselves

I would say the main thing that sets it apart is the duration of time you feel down. Everyone has their down days but if it goes on for longer than a few weeks then it could be depression.

I suffer from depression, I have for years. Everyone feels 'down'. It's when it lasts for a long period of time, with no periods of happiness to make you feel better, that you need to seek Professional help. I hope this helps, even a little.

waking up one morning and realizing you're afraid your gonna live

Depression is more long-term.

And people generally can't get over it without the aid of medication and/or therapy.
