First of all, he's young and has alot of responsibility - a wife and 2 kids. That is pressure and stress in of itself.

If he truly is bipolar, then he could be in a state of mania and wanting to feed it via going out and having a good time with friends.

He should be on bipolar medication. You said it made him flip out - I would ask what meds did he try? If he was only on an antidepressant, that would cause him to flip out.

Did he trial others? Usually, it takes a period of time until you find the right meds that suit the individual. A mood stabilizer is necessary.

My advice is that he should go back and see a psychiatrist who can treat his bipolar properly. Left untreated, episodes can become worse.

Once his bipolar is under control, you will be able to see if his behavior changes or if he continues to 'play' with his friends. Then you'll know if it's because he needs some maturity to take place.

If he only wants to be around friends drugs could be the reason.

I WAS. I'm not strong enough to deal with the mood swings and other drama associated with it.

Honey, he doesn't sound bipolar or manic depressive. I hate to say it....but you might want to look a little bit deeper.
