Bipolar disorder symptoms are characterized by an alternating pattern of emotional highs (mania) and lows (depression). The intensity of signs and symptoms can vary from mild to severe. There may even be periods when your life doesn't seem affected at all.

Signs and symptoms of the manic phase of bipolar disorder may include:

Euphoria
Extreme optimism
Inflated self-esteem
Poor judgment
Rapid speech
Racing thoughts
Aggressive behavior
Agitation
Increased physical activity
Risky behavior
Spending sprees
Increased drive to perform or achieve goals
Increased sexual drive
Decreased need for sleep
Tendency to be easily distracted
Inability to concentrate
Drug abuse

Signs and symptoms of the depressive phase of bipolar disorder may include:

Sadness
Hopelessness
Suicidal thoughts or behavior
Anxiety
Guilt
Sleep problems
Appetite problems
Fatigue
Loss of interest in daily activities
Problems concentrating
Irritability
Chronic pain without a known cause

watch what you say?

my son is adhd, very hyper.. he takes adderall

most kids grow out of it, but when adults still have it they still will need to take medication to correct it

includes add and bipolar

the therapist told me that there brain is whacked out and the meds slow it down so they can comprehend and able to do 'normal' things

There are various signs for all of the above, the trick is figuring out which is which. Hyper and depressive are both signs of bipolar, where as depression can be all on it's own.

Go take a look and good luck. I hope that through your learning will come understanding.

hyper refers to an intense state of something...ie...hyperfocused...bipolar ie...imagine a pendulum ...how it swings to the far left then to the far right...bipolar's do this with their moods...one moment they are extremely happy and the next they can be suicidal...manic depressive...ie. someone who experiences more states of depression than happiness...if your believe your spouse to be a hyper, bipolar then i would absolutely suggest seeing a therapist about it right away...the medicines are very good these days but unfortunately ea. type of medicine works differently on different people and it's all trial and error here...it takes two weeks for the medicine to be properly absorbed into the body and for the effects to be noticed...and if it doesnt work with one specific medicine then you have to try another...and wait the two weeks to see if it works...life with a bipolar can be extremely difficult, frustrating, aggravating, confusing, saddening, and even depressing because of the constant flux of uncontrolled emotion and depression and sleep...my ex was bipolar and one moment he would be dancing around the house and humming to himself and the next he would be slamming all the cupboards and sleep for a week...it was extremely hard on me and all his friends and family but once we got him on the right meds it was a much easier time for everyone...so please...get your spouse to see a doctor and learn everything you can about the disease...and know that with alot of love and patience and the right medication it can and will get better for all of you...

Wow. Big question. I was married to a bipolar person for 10 years and I can tell you, IT IS ROUGH. I could just cut and paste the symptoms off any website, but I'll let you know of my own personal experience of being married to a bipolar person. When we were dating and up until about 6 months after we married, I just assumed she was 'moody'. However, that was not the case. I knew something was wrong and eventually it all came out that she had issues (teenage sexual abuse, etc) and illegal drug use I was unaware of. When it became overwhelming to her, she went for counseling, and then a psychiatrist and was diagnosed as a classic bipolar. She had NO idea up until then either, other than she had felt different her entire life. Once we did get a diagnosis, however, the real work began...

Depression is as it sounds. Person is sluggish, lethargic, overwhelming feelings of sadness with no known reason, feelings of guilt, etc has no energy, ambition, sits around in the dark, sleeps a lot, cries etc. This is a problem when it lasts more than two weeks and affects their (and your) quality of life. Antidepressents usually help.

Bipolar people swing from depression (above) to mania (varying degrees), Manic episodes include things like rapid talking, 'delusions of grandeur', big plans, projects (that never seem to get done), spending money like a drunken sailor, sexual promiscuity (in some cases), sleeplessness (that is, going all night without any sleep, or even days), erratic behavior, scary risk taking (driving, etc) and obsessive-compulsive behavior, fixation on one issue, etc.

This used to be called "manic-depression' but somehow it was seen that 'bipolar' was more politically correct.

Depressed people can get better with antidepressant medications, while bipolars need 'mood stabilizers' to level the playing field such that the mood swings are not excessive.

There are may websites on dealing with it, both as the affected person and a spouse or close person to the affected person.

Untreated, bipolars will tend to self-medicate with illegal street drugs (cocaine, crank, meth for the depression, and 'downers' etc for the manic episodes). Other self-medications used are alcohol, marijuana, and other depressants obtained illegally (valium or other benzodiazipams, etc).

Be prepared for a roller coaster ride if you are married to an undiagnosed bipolar individual. Be prepared for SEVERE mood swings, and you may even see it happen (mood swings from depression to mania) several times in a day. Each mood 'swing' is called a cycle, and depending the frequency of the cycling (some people cycle once a year or more, and some cycle monthly, weekly, daily and HOURLY!). You can get suicide attempts, overdoses, erratic behavior and you may find that your loved one will 'turn on you like a junkyard dog' in a matter of minutes.

Be understanding. Sometimes it will seem pretty dark and your spouse will yell at you, etc. Be prepared to deal with financial issues as well (you might have your spouse lie to you about spending money) or overdraw your checking account.

I suggest, if you can get them to agree that something is amiss, to get evaluated by a psychiatrist.

There are medications, but they do have (sometimes BIG) side effects. Any medication that is prescribed, you and your spouse should sit down and research on the internet and check out the side effects before committing to a particular medication. Medications like lithium, abilify, etc are mood stabilizers. Other meds, like depakote (used primarily for anti-seizure) have mood stabilizing effects as well. Sometimes it takes days or weeks for the med to work, sometimes a particular med will not work at all, and sometimes a med will work fine for months are years and then stop working....

I strongly SUGGEST you obtain a copy of the book "An Unquiet Mind" by Kay Redfield Jamison and read it as soon as possible. It helped me to understand what we were facing. See the link below:

Remember, though, there is NO cure.

Even though I dont' know you, I will say a prayer for you, because you are going to need friends and support. Seek out help! Find a local bipolar support group ASAP if you really love this person and are willing to stick it out, go for it. Otherwise, you (or they) will eventually tire of it and one of you will leave. You will tire or your spouse may start to feel guilty, or overwhelmed about subjecting you to all this stuff and leave you. It will be especially rough on any children you have because they will not understand it at all, and it will be YOUR job to educate them.

Good Luck!!
