Has anyone overcome depression without taking medication?!

Question: It's funny that you should ask this, because I have been taking antidepressants for 10 years, but now because I think I am pregnant, I decided to not take them and have not done so for 2 weeks. I have suffered a few bouts, but have managed to talk myself out of them! If anything, I have been feeling really good - may be because of thinking that I am pregnant.

I have take Floxatine, but do not believe that I am addicted to them, for I have not had to ween myself off them.

I think it is a difference between: Clinical depression and Social depression. With the first, I do believe that one would have to take pills because it is to do with the chemicals in the brain, whilst social is to do with the enviroment that we live in, in which case, it can be overcome.

i came off prozac after many years of depression,i changed to a healthy diet and started excersising(a bit), changed my outlook and i feel much better

Not personally as I've never suffered from it but I've heard really good things about exercising and taking Omega 3 with high DHA in it.

depends if its emotional or mental depression.

YES!

I was on 4 different antidepressants before I tried other means. My side effects were SOO severe and my doc told me no, I couldn't get off of them. Last time I saw him!

I used a Nature's Sunshine product called Mood Elevator (concentrated version) and it was great...then I started eating super clean...fruits, veggies...no soda and rarely eat refined sugar...but I can't make myself eat that clean all the time...I started drinking T-Blast. That's what I drink now and it's just fruit juice with herbs. I LOVE IT. Mostly that the dark cloud is gone and I have lots of energy. Good luck. yes i have but you must have faith i am not as they say bible preaching trust in the lord go to bed and pray in time your prayers will be answered so always have patience as well.

Yes, several times. Once I took Prozac, but it didn't help and I still eventually got better. My depression never lasts for more than 8 months.

Hard excercise releases chemicals in your body that can help control serotonin levels.( thats what many meds do). It also gets you out of the house, out of bed, and at least you feel like you're doing something. I've been diagnosed with major depression which I believe Ive had most of my life. Before I knew what it was I exercised. It really helped. I had to continually raise the intensity of the workouts as my depression worsened. At one point I was doing 1 1/2 hours on a stairmaster at the highest setting then working out on a rowing machine for 30 minutes. (I know its pretty extreme). Eventually I got so depressed I couldn't work out anymore. In fact it took about everything I had to get up and go outside. That's when I started taking meds. Now I take meds and excercise at a more "normal" intensity ( I started doing martial arts several years ago) I can tell a huge difference if I don't exercise.

Sorry for the long winded answer. I guess I should have just wrote "try exercising".

Best wishes.

That would depend on who you are.
Myself, I was on all the new wonder drugs as they came out, when I was younger, and due to them, I've had a few suicide attempts, and now I refuse to take any sort of pills. My depression is still there.
Me personally, I dont like nothing anymore and so my depression gets worse, but I will not take drugs that seem to work for the mildly depressed.

So look at who you are, and if you can come up with certain aides, like reading sewing or something else that would take your mind off when the depression starts and then get support from understanding friends, I do feel that it is possible.

For me honestly, there is no hope.

A genuinely good way to alleviate depression is to take as vigouros exercise as you are phsically and healthly able .(check with your doc., first) The body,s natural pain killers ,endorphins, kick in after about 10-15 minutes and give you a natural (& well deserved ) sense of "well being" which lasts for a long tme after training. There are of course many additional benifits, i.e., you are fitter , look better and therefore feel better about yourself and everything/everyone around you. Go on give it ashot & good luck

Yes some have. Depends upon the depth of the depression. Exercise, doing good things for others, a healthy sleep routine and diet all help. If, however, the depression is deepseated and there are suicidal ideations, a doctor's intervention is crucial. That would just be availing oneself of all the "tools" to deal with the depression.

yes it is possible there are different types of depression, chemical and circumstantial.
depending on your reason for depression you may well recover from it through other means.
chemical imbalance in the brain is often hereditary so is best treated with antidepressants however exercise and eating well helps to. i suffered terribly with depression and bought a dog, it meant i could get out in the fresh air.
i wouldn't recommend this to everyone though.
you need someone to talk to, maybe a councillor or online help group anything that means you don't have to bottle it up.
goodluck
