Do some people require more sleep than others and can you train yourself to need!

Question: it seems like i need a lot more sleep than the average person. whenever i get the chance i sleep for at least 12 hours. on school nights i usually get about 8 hours but this isnt nearly enough. i usually nap when i get home. it seems like if i dont get 12 hours of sleep i am tired throughout the day. and no i am not lazy. i am healthy and active and i workout every day. why does it seem like i need so much sleep? can i train myself to need less sleep by sleeping less on the weekends?

Some people need more sleep than others. I have friends that only need six or seven hours of sleep a night. Not me, I need about nine hours or ten to really feel rested. At different ages you require different amounts of sleep too. Older people that are retired sleep less hours at night because they usually take a nap during the day at some point as well. Teens require more sleep also. Do what ever is good for you, but remember that too much sleep can even make you feel worse during the day.

that is weird bc if i go to sleep at like 10pm i cant wake up but if i got to bed at like 12 i wake up no trouble

yes u can train urself to need less sleep i spent a week only getting four hours of sleep and i felt like heck the whole week but i kept doing it and now its my regular schedule and i feel fine sleep is a waste of time in my opinion.

We have the same first name and last initial btw lol.

Why would you want to? Isn't knowing your own mind and body and living in a way that is best for it the right way?

Sleep apnea? Even if you are active and healthy this can cause problems with your energy. Maybe you should go see a specialist.

interestin question dat i'm curious to kno too, although i don't kno how to answer ur question

I love to sleep and am not ashamed of it...I used to run on empty all the time and all it does is destroy your body and mind...I sleep 7 or 8 hours a night and always take a 2 hour nap after work...and I feel good most of the time...sleep is needed to refresh the body and mind!!!

yes, some people need more sleep to function. i assume you are in your teens. the average teenage needs a minimum of 10 hours. i on the other hand, can go to sleep at and wak up two hours later and be ready for my day! [ i have insomnia though] you shouldnt be worried though. sleep is a good thing!

you could sleep one half hour less every day until you finally reach desired sleeptime. this could train you possibly!

best of luck --?--

This is something that you definitely have to go to a doctor to get a correct answer since it can be low iron or something in your glands that cause fatigue. You might want to change your diet by intaking more iron and try to stay away from saturated fats. It can be a combination with physical fitness as well. Try excercising, having a set eating plan, and get that mind working. I had the same issue and my lifestyle was pretty much drone...once I started getting motivated to do things it got better.

Its been scientifically proven that teens especially need more sleep, 8-12 hours should be sufficient. Exercise, being active physically and mentally is great and should relieve some of that. Make sure you're eating nutritious foods and taking vitamin & mineral supplements in case your diet is missing something. Maybe talk to your doctor and have them do blood tests to make sure you don't have a health problem such as "Anemia" which would cause you to feel extra tired.

okay, you're fine, but just gradualy cut down on the ammount of sleep you get. don't quit if you get tired, just continue. Try cutting down about 5-10 minutes every day. I once slept just 2.5 hours of sleep and woke up on my own, fully awake. If you feel adreinaline then go to sleep immediately and keep going to bed then until you feel fine then go later again

P.S. I'm a teen.

YES .but i think this (condition) comes with being so healthy and active....... PROBBABLY for your age group (adult 20-80) you neec exactly 12 hours of sleep in order to fuction. but this is not a bad thing. i find you lucky i'm an insomniac.

EXAMPLE: go to sleep 8:00 p.m(Just an example) or five or 10 minuets before that however long you know it takes you to go to sleep.... than set your alarm to 7:00 (just an example) and yes...... you will be tired but keep doing this for two weeks or so and your body will DEFINETLY get used to it.

this may sound stupid, but one thing i found out is that i had food allergies. this caused me to want to sleep A LOT (it was really ridiculous).
i went to a chiro / nutritionalist / kinesthesiologist and he found I had simple food allergies. i laughed at him, but then when i tried it, my energy level came back up and i had to sleep less. i got back into a normal range of 8 or so hours of sleep (which was MUCH better than what I was doing).

It was hard to stick to the "diet", but I ALWAYS found that when i ate those foods i was 'allergic' to i would end up sleeping horrific amounts and missing all sorts of important things.

so - check it out if you want. it couldn't hurt.

best of luck.
