Possible to cure bipolar?!
Question: I've read that scientists in Australia were trying to find cures for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. I don't believe it's possible. My boyfriend says it is. His arguement? That the brain can correct itself. Everyone elses thoughts?

Well, since there is a genetic predisposition to it I think THAT will be where the CURE will manifest itself. Which is good enough for me. To know that my kid and her future generations WILL NOT have this genetic time bomb ticking away. That is good enough for me.
And for all the posters that say it is a fake illness. You have NO CLUE the torment and destruction this REAL chemical imbalance can cause.
I was always mainstream and functional and contributing to society. Well, this genetic time bomb decided to go off when I encountered a year of extreme stress. The predisposition to this REAL illness unlocked Pandora's box and I went through absolute hell until the docs diagnosed me correctly. Its incredible that for a FAKE illness that the meds they put me on stabilized me and I returned to the mainstream as a functional and contributing member of society. You guys piss me off. You REALLY have NO CLUE.
The torment and devastation to my life and my families life was very real. Like I would have gone through that willingly.

My extended family is slowly beginning to be diagnosed and maybe, just maybe they will start using the legal meds instead of the street drugs that they were self medicating with.

okay well, now that i know you already know about treatment, i had to go to counciling and my doctor prescribed antideppressants for me. there is also acupuncture treatment too, which is the procedure of inserting needles into the points to relieve depression, but that is more expensive than prescriptions, i never had to do that though so i don't really know how it feels or whatever.

it is possible to go into remission with this illness. that is, to put it at bay. curing and remission are two different things. it is like when someone has cancer and it goes into remission.
I don't belive in a cure for it either. However my mom does.

Bipolar disorder is commonly treated with Lithium. The brain does not correct itself. That is a really uninformed opinion.
There's treatment, but no cure.
In depression, though, taking an anti-depressant for a year or so, then tapering off, gets 'pathways' in your brain to open so you are no longer depressed, even without medication.

No there is no cure and I don't think there ever will be. My sister-in-law has run the gamut of drugs, electric shock and psychiatry and nothing for her really helps.
Lady of Liberty has no idea what she is talking about. My sister in law refuses to go on disability because it would mean admitting she is ill and she just won't do it. Sadly her manic episodes has cost her and her husband everything and they are desperately poor.
But NO I do not believe there is or will be a cure.
Hello............Truehope.com......... you may have seen the organization's documentary on the discovery channel. All we can do is truly hope that someone has come up with an effective treatment for bipolar and many other mental illnesses. They say that this stuff(a natural product) has an 87% success rate.
No known cure, as of yet-however Scientists are continually looking into finding cures for Bipolar-Manic-Depression.

It's called discipline. Give me a thumbs down if you want but this Bi Polar only surfaced when our Government decided that spanking your children wasn't necessary.
