Sleeping 11-12+ hours per night?!

Question: I'm 19, and I'm sleeping 11-12+ per night (not counting naps). I don't want to sleep this much; it's consuming half of my life and causing a lot of distress and dysfunction in my daily living.

I also take naps a lot during the day.

My parents won't listen to me. They call me lazy, incompetent, and every name under the sun. I can't help that I sleep so much; I have no control over it - but my parents have no sympathy for me, saying that it's my fault. Thus, they won't help me with this condition, but only hurt me and make me feel guilty for something I have no control over.

Please, someone help me. What can I do? This has been going on for over 2 years.

There is a condition known as hypersomnia, whereby the individual needs to sleep much longer than what is considered normal

I, on the other hand, am an insomniac and envy you! :)

Good luck

find a hobby and stay up all night and you will get good at it fast.

Your body is "over slept",
Basically it makes you feel tired even when your body is not.

eat more nutritious foods, i.e fruits, vegetables, wholemeal breads and cereals...poor nutrition leads to fatigue. Wholemeal foods release energy in the body over a prolonged period of time...keeping you from feeling so tired.

Exercise is also vital - A higher metabolism as a result of exercise, gives the body higher energy bursts - you wont be able to sleep during the day because you will be buzzing.

a few changes to diet and lifestyle is all it takes.

oh, and when you feel the need to nap DON'T. You will over sleep and feel even worse when you get up.

good luck!

Sounds like depression. When I used to sleep that much I just didnt feel like being up and with your parents not really being understanding I dont blame you. Do something that requires you to get up early. Maybe enlist your friends to help you out. Working helps me get a decent sleep schedule and also doing some kind of exercise.

you may have depression. There are meds for that. You need to go see a doctor.Another thing, you may have a sleep disorder..and not even know it.

It is not uncommon for young people to sleep in different patterns than adults. I am 25 and only since half a year can I say that i fell alert in the morning (when I was younger I could be awake at night but had problems getting up earlier than 11.
The only medical conditions I can think of are: narcolepsy (excessive day time sleepiness), depression, or a different cardiac rhythm (needing to sleep at different times than the majority). What I think though is that maybe you have hormonal issues related to stress and general post-puberty hormonal irregularities, which result in you needing more sleep. I consider myself generally healthy, but if i could I would sleep 12 hours every few days (my organism needs it that way).
Your parents are deeply wrong to say anything derisive about your sleeping patterns: every body has the right to control their bodies and the amount of sleep they need.
They are making themselves ridiculous.

Start breaking that cycle. Thats too easy. Just work on it.
Get alarm! Turn alarm on so you sleep only recommended 8 hrs.
During a day when you feel like sleeping or taking a nap get coffee or energy drink. Now dont over do on that because we dont want you to have other health issues, so try to check out healthy energy drinks with low carbs and no sugar.
Try to find a hobby or something to occupy you so you almost have to stay up. Activities can improve your sleeping cycle.
Go to gym few hours before bed time. So you absolutely tired and then make sure you go back to only 8 hrs of sleep.
Good luck!

you have to go to a Doctor and if you don't wanna go then try to organized your mined and be4 you go to sleep say wake up at 700 or Wat ever you wanna wake up ....... if that don't woke than you got a problem

it could be depression or maybe chronic fatigue syndrome...talk to a professional
