Is anyone else against giving SSI to people who say they're "bipolar&qu!

Question: life can make you depressed, deal with it. What's going to happen to people who pay taxes when the money's gone and they retire? This "disease" was created by doctors being paid by drug companies.

That's like getting SSI for being "left handed" or being "far sighted". Life is tough - you deal with it. I have bipolar disorder and have had nothing but difficulties with work but don't qualify for disability income because I'm not sick enough. That's cool. I'd rather have the ability to earn a living, and do it, than have society spoon-feed me and resent it.

F uck you. Go burn in hell. Want living proof of bipolar? I'd love to meet you. Get to know my multiple selves and states of mind... I am sure you'd appreciate me shoving my hoards of pills down your throat and handing you a bleach cocktail to wash it down.

Coffee sometime?

You wouldn't be saying that if you had it now, would you?

No different then someone with heart disease or high blood pressure or other physical ailments who get SSI.

Anyone who has worked pays into social security so why can they not receive the benefits if they need them? Thats what social security is there for.

Well, in a way I agree with you and in a way I do not. I do agree with your "encouragement" to minimize the amount of self-pity that someone has for themselves. Life is difficult and there's not much you can do about, aside from struggle on and accept it.

Bipolar disorders DO exsist and the individuals affected by it do have a difficult time ahead of them. Unfortunately, bipolar disorders have become almost a "trendy illness" perpetuated by individuals who self-diagnose themselves instead of leaving the "labelling", so to speak, to qualified medical practioners. I found a great deal of that when I was in highschool. People seem to think that because they are prescribed anti-psychotics, mood stabilizers, anti-seizure or anti-depressants (note: using anti-depressants to treat someone who is bi-polar is quite controversial in the medical world, although is occaisionally practiced depending on the indivdual) that they are suddenly "bipolar". This is usually untrue. I have taken a variety of these drugs in my lifetime and I am not bipolar.

I would, however, advise you to take a less aggressive and negative attitude towards these indviduals. Some of these claimants may actually BE bipolar, some of them may not be. You never know, really, unless you're a medical professional and its never fair to stigmatize someone for something they can't help. Even if they're not bipolar, they obviously have some issues and you should be sensitive about that.

I don't know what SSI stands for, but I can only assume its something negative.

Maybe more people are getting it than really need it, but you still piss me off. Bipolar disorder is a real problem and you shouldn't rant about areas in which you are ignorant.

I feel for people who actually have mental illness, and if it affects there ability to function then I see no reason they can't be helped. However, I do know many people in my area that are getting SSI for mental illnesses that they really do not have (unfortunately, my friends mother falls in this category, I think she's worked like 3 months her entire 40 something year old life), that infuriates me. I can not stand people that rip off the system. I am a taxpayer and do not take kindly to giving lazy scum bags money. However, if they have a problem that affects them that much then I'd be glad to help.

God I love you! Bipolar I /rapid cycling right here, and I'm currently in the SSI mess... Being bipolar is no joke; while off of my medications (over $1200 a month worth mind you), I start from decently depressed for about 2 days, then fairly normal for a few days, to eventually EXTREEMLY manic for about 3 days. While being manic, I have ruined or severely altered every aspect of normal life due to the way it makes you think, act, feel and make decisions. I have been arrested, thrown a TV through a window, thrown my wife to the ground, opened a pay-phone with a rock because it stole my quarter, jumped from the back of a moving truck, punched my fist through a windshield while my wife was driving because the song that was playing made me emotional, took back at gunpoint 20 lousy dollars that was stolen from me 10 minutes prior... While manic you make decisions that are completely outlandish, risky, and potentially life threatening.
Boy, thank god for those meds you help pay for... They even out the highs and the lows quite alot, and the insanity during manic moments is quenched - but they wreck your organs, make you sick to the stomach, make your mind really hazy, make activities dull, and I am left with some nights sleeping 14 to 18 hours, and other nights either not sleeping at all, or catnapping an hour or so.
- So, please answer me this; is it better to be a degenerate member of society, to not be on state assistance and meds, with the end result of me randomly inflicting myself unintentionally?

The disorder is real and thanks to the doctors who have dicovered and recognized it, it was not created.
The problems lies in the ability for some doctors to make the right diagnosis and treatment. treatemnt of choice for Bipolars are your mood stablizers and atypicals, SSRI may worsen a person in a manic phase or those who are rapid cycling especially in the absence of a mood stabilizer. get a good doctor a board certified fellow or diplomate in psychiatry and you'll be fine.
