My son just registered for college (Hes Bipolar) and ...?!

Question: No sooner is he in the door before he wants to drop out. OMG what is wrong with him?

Answers: No sooner is he in the door before he wants to drop out. OMG what is wrong with him?

Maybe he is just scared, talk to him.

you have to encourage him that he shouldn't give up yet. My mother is Bipolar and I see the mood swings she goes through and it's just a matter of not sweating the small things.

How long has he been bipolar? Before being diagnosed, I used to be able to think clearly and learning came easily for me. I earned a BA summa *** laude in English and aspired to be a computer securities lawyer. After getting sick, I lost motivation, learning ability, focus and drive. I also have a hard time sleeping and lack of energy during the day. Perhaps his illness and medication has the same or similar affects on him. I'm pulling for both of you. Duck

My question is what is wrong with you? How can you be a supportive person in your son's life if you don't have compassion for what he's going through?

I live with someone who is Bi-Polar. She has a Master's degree and because of her illness sometimes she can't get out the door.

I know it's frustrating, however you need to be a part of the solution, not part of the problem.

Sit down and listen to what your son tells you about why he is feeling he needs to drop out. Then go through and help him create coping skills to handle the stress of school.

Does your son realize that because of his chronic medical condition he can request additional time for assignments and tests?

If he doesn't have a therapist, then help him find him one close to his school.

Well you said he's bipolar so I would guess you already know what's wrong with him, he may have signed up for college during a manic phase and now realizes he doesn't really want to go, or the major life change could have triggered his depression. Talk to him and his therapist (he should certainly have one) about this.
