The stigma about depression is easing as information is becoming available for public knowledge. It is difficult to understand so many people will wrap it up in an uneducated nutshell and label it. Some people are actually afraid of what they don't understand so they make up excuses to stay away from people who are different than themselves.

You can only be responsible for your own understanding and outlook. If you are educated and have some understanding, that will go a long way to help another person to understand. But remember, you can't MAKE them understand. And try not to judge - it's not your place.

i guess because thet havent suffered it, they dont know how hard it can be to live with depression sometimes, plus they dont know anything about it

Actually, there's been a lot more talk about depression and its causes than ever before in history. More people are getting help because schools have trained personnel to look for the behavioral signs in youngsters. And, often, when the child gets help the parent must look at his or her own problems.

Sometimes depression is "situational", where it's used as a coping skill instead of anger or denial. Many depressed people cannot appropriately express anger.

Sometimes, as in my own family, there is an inherited malfunction of the brain that causes the disease to develop. These folks benefit from drugs like SRI's that give the brain more access to seratonin.

No matter what the cause of a person's depression, there is much more recognition of it as a treatable disease. If people around you are not informed, they may actually be expressing fear of what they do not understand. Their negative and misinformed reactions are not based on truth, and can be countered with a positive attitude about the depressed person's ability to recover.
