My medication is making me reallly hungry?!

Question: Hi, I'm 16 and started Paxil a week ago, and all the sudden today and yesterday I've been really hungry.

Most days I eat around 700-800 calories, but since I've started this anti-depressant/ anti-anxiety I know I have been eating so much more and am afraid to count the calories.

Help? Am I always going to have this insatiable appetite on this drug? I have no other complaints about it.. as far as I can tell its helping my depression and anxiety, but this hunger is crazy.

I'm 5'5" and weigh 120 pounds and I'd like to keep it that way. Anyone know good coping methods to stave off the hunger? It's unbearable to be hungry all the time.

You might want to check with your psychiatrist who's prescribing the meds. They keep track of unusual side effects and report them to the drug company.

Meanwhile, how about taking a clue from Weight Watchers and eating something with lots of fiber when you're hungry? There are some really tasty cereals, like raisin bran, that fill you up and the fiber counteracts a lot of the calories. Just an idea...(Gee, I wish I were 120 lbs again, but then none of my clothes would fit me...:@

When feel hungry, take only a little. The feeling will gradually go. Good luck..

Talk to your doctor to see if they can add something like Topamax. That's what my daughter's psychiatrist gave her when the serquol that she was on caused her to gain weight. See if it can be done before you gain to much. For some reason the topamax has helped her to lose most of the weight and if I"d known about it I would have put her on the two meds together. The serqual has helped with her anxiety and concentration.

700-800 calories is not enough food for anyone. Are you taking the medication for an eating disorder? Most people need 1600 calories a day, especially a teenager (you should probably have more than that, actually). Dieters generally should NEVER go below 900 calories a day, was my understanding, and you are not overweight.

You will have to call up your doc ad tell him/her about the problem. Psych meds can affect appetite.

700-800 calories is NOT enough food.
