How can i stop snacking and comfort eating?!

Question: when i'm bored or feeling depressed, i eat. and then i feel bad for eating, and often end up eating more or not eating anything at all for a day. i really need to lose weight, but i can't stop snacking. my mindset is that the more i eat, the fatter i get. so i don't eat breakfast ( but that's also because there's nothing i like for breakfast, and i can't eat early in the morning), and i've cut down my lunch. but then i get hungry and end up snacking. and then it's that vicious cycle where i snack, feel bad, and either eat more or nothing.

what should i do?

Oh dear, this sounds so familiar. If you don't eat breakfast, your metabolism doesn't get started until you DO eat. You body goes into 'fat storing mode', just in case it doesn't get fed again for a long time. Its a defence/survival mechanism. Can I suggest that you have a good breakfast before anything else. Don't plan your day around food and eat when you're hungry and not fanciful. Stop eating when your tummy feels full. If you chew slowly the brain tells you are full a lot quicker. Savour and enjoy treats a couple of times a week. The snacking thing is easy. Cut up fruit, vegetables and chicken and leave in the fridge to snack on when you get the nibbles. Have you considered slimming world or weight watchers? I lost more than 2 stone at slimming world and feel better than I have done for years. It has to be a way of life and not just a diet. You can do it..... Good luck. x The link below may interest you.

make a fruit smoothy, and it will fill you up and is healthy

I had the same problem...miss breakfast, have lunch and dinner but then ended up snacking late at night. So I decided to have breakfast, light lunch, early dinner...then got hungry at night and snacked. Easy solution....when all the rubbish junky stuff has run out, do not replace it. Every night now when I want to snack, no biscuits, chocolate, crisps etc....because I dont have any. I now resort to the fruit basket. Does the same job of comforting you and you can eat as much as you like and it is also doing you good at the same time.....works for me.

If you enjoy snacking then cut out all main meals and graze eat all day. Seriously it works if you graze on the right foods. Keep lots of fruits and nuts and yogurts etc in the house and one treat per day.

Hope this helps. Its what I do and I have lost weight. But I do eat weetbix for breakfast with low fat milk to get my metabolism working.

never starve yourself as that will slow down your metabolism and result in weight gain.

why don't you chop up lots of fruit and put it in the fridge ten when you feel like snacking just grab a handful of chopped fruit, i also used to freeze grapes overnight then the next day they are like hard sweets, they're good to suck on and good for you

Eat a small breakfast to tie you over till lunch then before 7 /8pm eat a proportionate size dinner! Eating 3 times a day is important and stops you snacking. Cutting out breaky will not help.

If you do want to snack, cut some carrot sticks and celery etc, just something thats healthy and drink lots of water, it fills you up.

I'm reading this really great book right now to tackle this problem. It's called 'Overcoming Overeating'.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Overcoming-Overe...

you can't eat of a morning because your used to not doing.any doctor will tell you the best way to start loosing weight is by not missing breakfast out, also fatty and quick fix fast foods do exactly that they fix your hunger for a while.give u heaps of energy short term then u burn out and require more.
its less to do with cutting down and more to do with what you eat, fast foods and quick fixes get you hungry again quicker and good size fresh foods give you ongoing energy and leave you satisfied longer. Also skipping breakfast can cause aweful headaches which in turn make you less likely to want to stand and cook and more likely to reach for the uicker options or comfort foods because you feel poorly.reward yourself with the quick option once or twice a week and you'll find ur comfort in your inch losses and feeling good about yourself my loves x

well just do this.... eat something every 3 hours BUT make them healthy things dont drink pop unless its diet dont drink milk unless its skim.... also try to eat vegatables such as carrots and letuce and fats fill you up faster than anything so try to cut down on your sugar and carbs eat stuff like unsalted nuts and chicken or turkey and have the occasinal piece of red meat but when you eat every 3 hours eat something small and dont eat 2 hours before you go to sleep and if you really want to lose weight diet is number 1 but exersise is number 2 in loseing weight so if you eat right and exersise you will lose weight so first you need to find how many calories a day you naturally burn then eat 200-300 less than that or eat just that and work out just a simple 20-30 min walk can burn 200-300 calories you have to burn more calories than you consume and there are 3500 calories in 1 pound of fat and 2500 pounds of fat in a pound of muscle so long story short eat less but more often dont eat 2 hours before you go to bed dont drink pop take a multivitiman if you can and cut down on your carbs and sugars also make sure to work out just a simple walk everyday can help you drop pounds hope i helped good luck

there is a diet which allows you to eat 6-8 snacks/light meals a day and it works cos ur constantly eating every few hours.

snack - 3pm - 2 handfuls of plain popcorn
dinner - 5 pm - a small bakepotato and 2 tablespoons of baked beans or tuna
snack - 7pm - small slice of fruit bread with a teaspoon of low fat spread
snack - 9pm - 1 small bananna and 1 tangerine/clementine

I eat out of boredom to. What i did was develope a green tea habit and i dont eat until im hungery and then i only have like 100-200 calories. I eat all th time but because of staying hydrated, and the green tea satifying the want of a taste in my mouth, I eat a lot less and its the easiest diet ever to be on because im busy.

next time you feel like eating make a cup of tea and if you still have the want to snack cut what you feel like in half and tell yourself in an hour youll have the rest - no need to deny yourself, but youll be surprize how much you dont eat when you just portion and dont act like your diet is a punishment - youll never binge either bcause eating all the time in small portion keeps your blood sugar up and you metabolism up

good luck, I wouldnt say im overweight but I put a few pounds during the holidays and i understand the frustration.

Seriously, a week-long backpacking trip (with others of course), away from all stores and civilization is a great way to start.
You carry everything you will use and eat on your back, and you can only carry so much weight while hiking. This will help you to get the exercise you need, help you plan your eating, and stick to the plan...or go hungry the last couple of days. With your map, plan to travel a number of miles each day, this will occupy the time and enhance the weight loss. It's good for the mind too, to get away and to think in silence, evaluating your life and how you live it.

I have a similar problem - I'm very much a grazer rather than eating big meals.

Firstly you need breakfast. It doesn't have to be toast or a bowl of cereal etc, there are lots of cereal bars around that taste really great. I generally have an Alpen bar or something similar. Like you, I don't like eating first thing in the morning so I spend a good hour or so getting up and ready for work then I eat on the way to work.

I set myself a specific time for having a mid morning snack and I try to make sure it's not high in calories - depending on my mood its sometimes fruit.

Lunch time I make sure I have something really filling so that afternoons, I won't be hungry.

Also, if you're eating out of boredom, you need to find ways to distract and entertain yourself. Try some fitness classes, swimming or going to the gym in an evening. Alternativly do an evening course and learn something new like a new language or a new skill.

If you're getting regular exercise you will find that bouts of depression will ease because you are stimlating the part of the brain that releases endorphins.

The best advice I can offer is don't totally deny yourself the things that you like - it'll make you want them more and you'll feel worse if you give in to cravings. Allow yourself your favourate things in moderation.

buy a Dr Phil book

It doesn't matter if you don't want breakfast: eat something anyway! DIETING: Go to: h t t p : / / c h o o s e d i e t . b l o g s p o t . c o m (you should type it in the usual manner) and select one, possibly changing, later. Eat 6 - 8 small meals, daily, with a little protein in each, preceded 20 minutes earlier with a large glass of water: this speeds up weight loss. Snack on any amount of celery sticks, with the occasional carrot stick, and/or slices of cucumber, tomato, bell pepper/capsicum, or raw onion, in any vinegar (a little salt & pepper/chilli powder is OK, but no oil, or sugar! Rinse your mouth with water, later, if using vinegar. Your body needs a small amount of [ preferably olive, or premium coconut* ] oil, daily, to be healthy: about 2 teaspoonsful, if not getting it in the rest of your food intake already). Understand and accept that many people use food in an attempt to fill an emotional void, which is unhealthy, and never works. Others eat out of boredom, so have plenty of things to keep you occupied. Well I go and brush my teeth and I think its the sweet taste of the toothpaste that seems to work!

Stop buying the comfort foods

Dump all those fatty snacks and sugary stuff. Give them away to an elderly neighbour. buy fruit and nuts and snack on them. NO MORE CHOCOLATE!!! Get a hobby, read a book, go for a walk, get out of the house. Break this spiral of depression. breakfast is the main meal of the day. It doesn't have to be a bog standard breakfast, you can have whatever you like for breakfast. Dump the fats and sugars. porridge in UHT milk, microwave for 2.5 minutes and add honey and maybe a banana. A really healthy filling breakfast. Sets you up for the day.

I think you should take up a new hobby or something, so that way you can take your mind off eating.

caretosh is right get the book i got it but i still do it the book will make you eat 3 good meals a day,but i have had same problem as you since i was 8 and the only cure i think is happiness, when im binge eating i know there is something wrong in my life, but even though it sounds mad i have stopped doing it mon 2 fri but binge sat and sun i go to gym in the week so my weight has stayed down it a 80 20 rule eat properly and heathily in the week and do what you want at weekends!
dont you wish there was help for people like us i do.
please try eating 3 good meals a day in the week and then u got the weekend to look forward to,cutting out meals makes you binge!
ps you can always email me....

The one idea everybody agrees on is that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So your first step is to find a food that you like and have that for breakfast. Once you have conjured your mind set about breakfast your are on the right road. Don't skip meals. Eat a little and often until you curb the longings. Just make what you snack on fruit or veg with a little proteen and carbs

walking will help to raise your metabolism and is very good for weight loss and also helps to lift depression. Walk for 30 minutes a day and in six weeks you will have lost a good dress size. If you cut down on snacking and cut out fats altogether you can loose a second dress size at the same time. All the best
Ann

Empty your pantry and lock yourself in the closet,.,..... or hire someone to punch you in the fact when you eat.

i dont know, apart from i very much hope you can get the help you may need.
you takecare i very much hope things get better for you very soon.
jesus loves you my child.

It's very bloody simple. Eat a breakfast. Eat a lunch. Eat a dinner. Do not buy the requisite fatty snacks that always fall back on.

Or even easier: eat less, exercise more.

Just do it but get support from others. Good luck

Snack healthy!!!
Try Carrot sticks, fruit ,celery, health bars!!!
Theres nothing wrong with snacking but you can pick better things to gorge on !!
Just think about what your gonna snack on !!

well u can snack but for the snack have some carrot or an apple or banana or any fruit or veg. this should help you lose a bit of weight. and there are some really tasty and healthy snack bars which are good for you.

Get up and go for a walk.

Eat fruit like mini boxes or raisins or an apple, jordans cereal bars, plenty of water which we sometimes mistake our hunger for thirst. To stop from picking dont buy in food in your cupboards like cakes, biscuits, crisps. Eat a healthy breakfast consisting of something like weetabix and a glass of orange juice. Then this should keep you going until midday lunch time. Dont starve just make your meals on a regular basis, drink between meals but if you do snack just pick something healthy. You'll notice your waistline go down.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)

To be born again, which Jesus said we must in order to go to heaven, you must repent of your sins and ask Jesus to be your Lord and Savior. God bless!
