Driving lessons..please help!?!

Question: I REALLY want to learn to drive, and more than that, i NEED to learn to drive as i have 2 kids and live in a very rural area where the buses are rubbish.
The problem is, that i feel so useless at driving, and get really bad nerves.
my main problem is that whenever i stall the car, i get really embarased, especially when it happens inthe middle of town!
Has anyone got any usefull suggestions as to what i could do to calm down please?!

As a driving instructor, I come across this all too often. All I can say is don't worry about stalling. More often than not, if it's in the middle of town, people will not even notice due to outside noises. Also please bear in mind that most people are more patient than you think. If you should become aware of someone behind you throwing their toys out of the pram, then it's THEY that have a problem not you! So be confident, tell yourself you're going to do it....and you will.

Good luck.

you shouldn't get embarrassed about stalling a car all learners do it if you had a decent driving instructor you might feel a bit more at ease. it's not as embarrassing as what i did the other day i stalled the car about 5 times got really angry and then realised i forgot to take the handbrake off i wasn't on a driving lesson though i was turning my boyfriends car round for him next time you stall the car just laugh at your self because that's all you can do i find it amusing when i do it, especially when i see others laughing at me.

Practice, practice, practice! YOu have just got to keep driving and you will eventually get better. Is there anyway to get an automatic instead? That would solve the stalling problem.

so you stall...so what...not like your the only learner to do it is it...i stalled all the time when i was learning, i just shrugged my shoulders and started the car again.
ok for every time you stall your car you have to let your kids get away with something....soon stop you stalling!
I live in a remote place and couldnt get around...if thats not incentive enough i dont know what is...the freedom you have when you can drive where you wanna go...wow...nothing like it.
good luck hun....

I used to take CALMS. They helped me especially when i did my test. I think you can still get them. Try a chemist or places like superdrugs if in the UK.

They are a natural remedy and helped me loads.

Learning to drive is nerve wrecking! Just try to forget about everyone else and concentrate really hard.

im learning too.
2 kids sh it bus service
but i dont panic everyone knows im learning thats wat the sign plates are for. your in a car that got learner all over it.
everyone who is driving behind you learnt at one time too.

if you continue like this itll cost you a fortune
best of luck

Can't give you any tricks etc, best thing is not to worry about it, its normal to stall a car when your learning, I stalled on the driving test....still pasted....

Just wear normal clothing that you feel comfortable in and try and relax. I know easier said than done. As you have more lessons and become more experience you'll feel better and look back and think what was all the fuss about !

practice make perfect. Since you live in a rural area, it should be easy to find an old field to drive around in. Or, try a parking lot after hours. Just take it slow and easy and know that everybody has to start somewhere.

I know how you feel. On my first driving test, I was so petrified about stalling on a hill start that I did a wheel spin that would have made the Stig proud about 5 minutes after leaving the test centre, and after that my nerves were pretty much shot. After that, I persuaded a relative to put me on their insurance and take me out to a supermarket carpark on a Sunday evening, so that I could just potter around out of the traffic, and generally get used to driving. Then I got back on the road with my instructor and worked up from a quiet housing estate to uphill on a dual carriageway in the rush hour.

If you're in a driving school car, ignore what other road users think of you, they probably did the same thing as learners, and just concentrate on what you have to do.

as everyone has said stalling is normal and expected when you're learning to drive on a stick. an automatic would be better. don't worry though you'll pick it up and then when you see someone else stall you'll chuckle and remember when you were learning. just take your time and learn. don't rush yourself.

first of all your the boss. when it comes to driving you tell it what to DO. not the car. also stop calling yourself USELESS. have faith in yourself. and start practising on private land if possible. to build up your confidence. and get a GOOD INSTRUCTOR. wish you well. good luck.

hun, don't worry, you pay for your lessons and you have a qualified instructor with you so do not worry about it. If you have never drived before it does take time and practice. The face that i live in a city was harder for me to pass compared to my cousins and friends who live outside the city who pass quicker because they live in a town. Another thing you should remember is when your mates go on about i passed and i started driving lessons before u. Let them say that. Another thing is when you book your test, do not tell anyone the date apart from your family and keep it to yourself because when you pass then tell them you had your test then etc. Just keep your chin up and everything will go fine. Good luck and congrats when you pass =) xx

have you tried hypnotherapy for pre-test nerves?
have a look at the website below for more info
Good luck.
