Is putting hot water on skin considered self harm?!

Question: I have BPD, and i do not self harm, but i do put on water that is extremely hot and put my arms under it and i scratch it because it makes my skin itch, but not because i am upset or anything, but because it feels good. That is not the same as self-harm right?

Yes. And the fact that it feels good confirms that it's self harm.

You are denying your feelings that's why you "don't feel upset". Your feelings & thoughts that are destructive are in you subconscious & you need to return to therapy to work thru your underlying feelings so you are not so afraid of them.

Your harming your skin by putting it under hot water. Your harming yourself. Even if your not doing it as an outlet for emotional problems it is still not right and you really need to speak to your doctor about this.

Anything where you physically harm your body, no matter the intent can be considered self harm. In your case i would maybe say you are harming yourself or i would say to see a dermatologist to assess your situation

sorry amigo its EXACTLY the same anything done to inflict pain is self harm try talking to an amigo or something eles you can contact me if u have any questions try and see a councellor bout this....even tho you say its not due to emotional problems it quite likely is subconsciously

Self harm is doing things to yourself with the intention of harming yourself for emotional relief.

Its seems to be a popular thing these days and used out of context. The real self harmers are people that stay very quiet about it and cut themselves often very deep and then go to great pains to hide their injuries.

People these days confuse true self harm, with the popular new age self harming for attention. They are two very different things.

No, it is self-harm and denial.

That is self-harm, because its harmful and you are doing it to yourself.

That would depend on if the water is hot enough to actually scald your skin. I can't judge how hot "extremely hot" would be.

If the water was actually boiling, yes, that would be self harm.

If the water came out of a tap it probably isn't self harm unless the water heater is set unusually high.

Some people can tolerate hotter water than others. But it would definitely be abnormal if the water is literally boiling.

You could have a form of sensory deprivation. And the reason why you use extreme hot water on yourself is because you normally cant feel physical pain. This is common in people with autism, thats what they often head bang, spank, or hit themselves.
The reason behind self mutilation is to release anger or other tensions.
I would go to the dr either way.. you may severly harm your self either way
