If you blurt out mean things...do you have turrets?!

Question: my brother does it sometimes too and he is in his mid 30's. He says mean stuff a lot and I;ve started realizing i say mean things in a joking way too. The thing is that i don't mean to hurt people when I say them, but more that i think it's kind of like funny or charming. It is starting to get me into trouble, do I need treatment? I say things like "Damn she's ugly" within hearing distance of people that would get offended or i say "yea screw her" . Its really pretty bad and im a good person. What do i do?

From what you described, it sounds more like an impulse control problem. It sounds as though you could try to be more tactful and a bit more sensitive. Openly criticizing someone isn't "funny or charming" and it is something you can control with practice.

Tourettes?

Ummm, no, not tourrettes. I think that this is probably something you and your brother learned as children. It just means that you're insensitive to other people's feelings. You should consider taking some sensitivity training and possibly something to do with impulse control, where you learn to think before you speak.

I don't doubt that you are a good person, but you have learned a very bad behavior at some point. You need to stop and think everytime you prepare to open your mouth. You need to think to yourself, "If someone would say to me what I am about to say, would I be hurt?" and then proceed with caution.

The answer to your question is probably yes. My nephew has it. But I would suggest that he seeks professional adivce. Good luck. Hope this helped.

There's a different between turetts and being bluntly outspoken. Maybe you should just watch what you say more; it doesn't sound like you have a mental problem--more like an attitude :)

Tourette's is a condition that manifest in tics of three specific types. One is the verbal tic. Two is the physical tic. Three is the emotional tic.

All three may have a component of "utterance" but the origin is psychochemical.

The verbal tic is an involuntary utterance that is usually scatalogic and mostly disconnected. In that condition the most repressed verbalizations are released involuntarily.

The physical tic is classically manifested in involuntary blinking, grimacing or a body shudder. It becomes obvious to those around in a very short time. Again, it is a reactive movement having its origin in a repress behavior or action like the verbal tic above. It is accompanied by sighs, grunts, throat clearing or a cluck of the tongue.

The emotional tic is displayed as anger, glee, fear, etc. It may be accompanied by the tics mentioned above. This tic is sometimes described as freaking out. It is the explosive behavior of those you described in your expanded statement. We do not call such behavior "jerky" for no reason. Watch the body motion of accected person the next time you are able.

Tics are a chemical deficiency. The chemical involved is in the nicotine family. The nerve and brain cells involved show a distinct deficiency in providing correct receptor conditions for the chemicals involved.

Look at smokers who are in a state of deprivation for nicotine. What is the state of their verbal, physical and emotional being?

sometimes, but in your case no. its just a habit you CAN stop doing it but people with tourettes cant
