I know how you feel. I have had anxiety for most of my adult life. I also put others first. I have been seeing a psychiatrist for 6 yrs and I am on anxiety medicine. Trust me it works. I tried to do it alone and it was horrible. When I am out and about I sometimes have to leave the store because the anxiety is so bad. I feel closed in and when I walk I have to concentrate because it feels as if I am not touching the floor. I feel like I can't breath right. The medicine does work but sometimes the anxiety is so bad that I can't go anywhere. As far as what people think of me, I don't care because unless they have walked in my shoes then they should keep their comments to themselves. My son use to tell me it was all in my head but then he developed anxiety and he finally knew what it is like to have it. The most important thing for you to do is for you to take care of yourself. Have you suggested medication with your therapist? Counseling and medication work pretty good together. Good Luck to you and I hope you get the help you need.

I always do better after a vigorous workout , many anxiety problems are linked to poor cardiac fitness , take a long walk and go at least one hour with out stopping , if your body is weak your mind will be weak , any aerobic workout will do , it has an amazing affect on social anxiety , i have to do public speaking often and always do much better after a strong workout. always take a watch , one hour during a workout is like 3 hours on the couch , and drink water during the workout , good luck

One solution is to go somewhere that nobody knows you, and deliberately make an utter fool of yourself: put on a paper hat, and scream out: "I'm queen/king of America!", or something else ridiculous, then get back in the taxi, (warn the driver of your intentions, first) or car, and leave. People will point, and say: "Look at that idiot". But, you're probably not up to the stage where you can do that, yet (I can, and I used to be shy). Regard it as your final test: once you have accomplished it, the barrier will be broken; just don't go too far, the other way! Learn to laugh at yourself, and give a big, cheesy grin when others see you do something foolish, as we all do, occasionally. It will endear others to you, if you don't do it too often. Hi--You did the right thing by seeing a therapist. I also have social anxiety disorder and depression, & that with a combination of meds has done me wonders. Unfortunately, Social anxiety disorder typically persists for life, often waxing and waning. But don't lose hope. Treatment can help you control symptoms and become more confident and relaxed in social situations.

The two most effective types of treatment are medications and a form of psychotherapy called cognitive behavior therapy. For the greatest effectiveness, they're often used in combination.

Psychotherapy:
Cognitive behavior therapy is the only type of therapy that has been shown to be effective in treating social anxiety disorder. This type of therapy is based on the idea that your own thoughts
