Getting off of OCD medicine?!

Question: i've been taking luvox for ocd since i was 14. now i'm 21. i'm only on 25 mg. i don't think thats a theraputic dose so i'd like to get off of it and take something else, like zoloft, since i still have really bad ocd.

i tried to stop taking it last year. i had horrible withdrawl. i was dizzy and hot and so out of it that i just started taking it again. has anyone else had this problem? i'd like to know how you ended a medication without bad side effects.

The best way is to taper off slowly. Even if you are a low non theraputic dose.

Break your pill in half, begin going from a whole pill one day to a half pill the next, alternate until you feel comfortable.

Then just take a half pill every day until you feel comforable.

Then break your half pills in to half. Alternate half pill one day to the 1/4 the next. Do this until there are no side effects.

Then take just 1/4 pill until there are no effects.

Then 1/4 and none alternate.

Then none.

Talk to you Doctor as well. You may be able to "cross taper" which is tapering down on your Luvox while begining another drug.

Prozac is very good for OCD and may work better than Zoloft.

Best of luck!!

Luvox has the shortest half-life out of any of the antidepressants. That simply means it moves out of the body system very quickly, leading to withdrawal symptoms, which are described by many to feel like having the flu.

I'd make sure you're working with your doctor, or at least talk with a pharamcist about the best way for you to come off this without feeling poorly.

All the best,
