After severe heavy traumatic shock,I was left with what was termed chronic emoti!

Question: this leaves me wide open to medical shock, which is a pain.I not only have to deal with a big emotional problem rationally,I also become ill from it,out of the blue. It's better than it was a few years back, for sure, and I treat it promptly, but at least two weeks of down time.Suggestions to shorten it more?

i don't know you'r symptoms erin but it sounds slightly similar to mine a few years ago i had a stroke i have more or less recovered completely but it left me with an emotional problem i. e. ican cry when i'm supposed to be laughing and vice versa and it also does funny things to my short term memory and i don't think there is any treatment left to try anyway its been too long now and i've learned to live with it

I prayed a lot and tried to help others with their problems.

I have social anxiety disorder, myself. And PTSD, courtesy of the "correctional" facility. But I've gone from being someone who needs to be under a blanket in the dark in the fetal position to someone who can make small talk with cashiers and strangers. More than medication or therapy or self help books or any of that crap I have found self-talk/self-assertion to be the most effective. Any time you hear yourself asserting something over yourself like "I can't do this", consciously defy it to yourself. Accepting the beliefs you have currently will only perpetuate the disorder, because what we believe determines how we behave. Other times this quite a feat because you have to speak out not only against your thoughts but your entire state of mind, and what your mind does to your body, but it CAN be done! At first it may seem like during an anxiety attack for instance, that you are the calm voice somewhere else watching it happen, but this growing awareness and distance from it is good. You just keep at it. I'm not saying it's easy. I'm not suggesting that all you've got to do is say "I can do this" and you can. You never stop saying it, and if it's your natural disposition you never stop having to. It's either a moment by moment decision to conquer or be victimized by your own internal state. Will you determine it, or let it determine you?

I have suffered from ptsd myself. Not to the extent that you have. I read what Backslash has said,he is right on with his statement. I do this myself. I wake up ever morning and tell myself " you are going to be happy and productive today ------put a smile on your face and get going". Since I have done this those things that have haunted me have become the past. I'm not saying they are totally gone, but doing this out of routine does not let it rule my life. I will also say it gets better all of the time. I seldom have trouble that I used to have. I'm happier than I have ever been in my life. I pray ever day and this I believe this helps me too. I hope this well be of help to you.

I suffered from PTSD after Vietnam. All the fancy psychology the VA had to offer didn't do anything to help. I ended up in Alcoholics Anonymous by mistake following a failed suicide attempt and found other Vietnam Vets who were also diagnosed with PTSD. We formed our own 4th/5th step meeting (The Welcome Home Group) and of 15 starters in 1989, 12 of us are still around with no slips, relapses or other ill effects.
