Effexor/side effects?!

Question: My doctor prescribed this for me 2 weeks ago for anxiety.
I havent started it yet because I fear side effects.
Anyone ever take this, what side effects did you have if any, and how effective was it for you?

Well... I also didn't take it because i was afraid of the side effects... pretty scary. I ended up thinking that it would only add to my problems. Years later, talking to a doctor friend, he told me that the effects listed are very rare.

so... i know how you feel.

I was on this a few years ago. Hated it. I was shaky all of the time, very awkward (dropped things, stumbled things a lot) and felt WORSE than before. It just clogged my mind. A friend of mine took this as well and had to switch to something else because she went through the same thing I did! However, not everyone reacts the same way. You won't know until you try.

*edit* I also ALWAYS had a dry mouth.

The side effects weren't too bad when starting on Effexor, but after a while the depression would creep back so I always had to go to higher dosages. Got to the highest dose and was still very much depressed and started to get very irritable too. Doctor took me off it and the brain zaps/shocks were terrible. Like a jolt deep inside my head and I had trouble sleeping.

I was on Effexor for 1 year. It was absolute hell for me. It made my stomach hurt really bad. I was also going out and partying all the time. I was sleeping around and just doing alot of things that I dont do in general. I weaned myself off of it which was also hell! It wasnt until I told a therapist about this that she said I had a manic reaction to it. I didnt know what mania was, as I had never had it before. I thought the drug was supposed to make you act and feel like that. I really had nothing to compare it to. Effexor works wonders for some. It can also be an absloute nightmare for others. This is true for all anti depressnts though. Shoot for al meds in general. The onyl way to know how you will react is to try it yourself. See how it plays with your body chemistry. If you start to do some really off the wall types of things though. Let your doctor know. I thought that I was only going out and pasrtying all the time because my depression had lifted. That was so not the case. If my depression ahd lifted I think I would have made better choices! Just be careful and pay attention to yourself.

charlie u need to take the meds go to drugs .com its a free site will give u info.or ask ur pharmacy they will b glad to give u a brochure ir answer any concerns

I was prescribed it once, but I didnt take it for very long, it made me angry, and I'm the most calm, easy going person ever, but it just felt like surges of rage were always going through me, it was scary, but everyone thought I was just being difficult by not taking it, but I was in a better state without them. Later I heard a news report about people committing suicide or doing violent crimes who were on effexor so I dont think its good news. I suffered from depression and anxiety for a long time and no medication helped me, you really need to change your mind with cognitive therapy and even things like changing your diet or your life.
