Depression and Dr. visits...?!

Question: how many of people who suffer depression feel that their concerns are trivialized by their primary care physicians? Do you believe it is because you suffer a mental illness? Does your doctor treat you like a hypocondriact (sp?)?

I hate going to the doctor for anything unless I am so sick/hurt that it justifies an ER visit because when any doctor hears that I am on antidepressants they automatically write me off as a crazy person or someone who is an addict. It is completely unfair!

Weird, I just spend the last five minutes answering you question, but I hit a key and everything disappeared from the page. So I'll start again, I think the doctors are pro's and they need all the help and support you can bring with you to the hospital. They are so far gone with information, people, policy and gawd knows what else, that they really need you to show them that you mean business. Otherwise, with their very human inability to cope, they may in fact typecast you. Your comments are not too different from what anyone would say that goes to the doc. And I know that people tend to typecast others. Gossip alone is hurting us more that half the stuff we think is wrong. But I like the fact that you are writing about stuff because it shows me you are intelligent, concerned and working on your stuff. This can lead to better treatment at the Doc's place. We need to keep everyone informed on how things are going because we are all in this together. Most of us have to see a doctor. And all of us deal with the pro's from time to time. It is crazy how we work out all this stuff. I just think you have to keep at it. It will add up, Good luck and take it easy. Mike t.

well i if were u i would change my doctor! That is ridiculous for them to making comments and stuff. Doctors don't label ppl as crazy and if they do they r stupid. I would change my doctor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is unfair and if this is how you feel your doctor is treating you find another. I suffer from depression and anxiety and I would never tolerate such behavior from any of my doctors. And as am EMT I never, ever trivialized how any of my patients felt and they would dial 911 due to being depressed and needing someone to talk to - it was fine with me.

Seek out a different Medical Provider. Half of the United States is on Anti-Depressants and I do not believe half of the U.S.A is crazy. These days it takes Anti-Depressants to get through most of the crap we are faced with every day.
Hang in there, and have faith and confidence in yourself, and please do seek out a different Doctor.

I never heard of a doctor writing people off cause they're on anti-depressants.. that's just not true, in fact most of them take them, so I don't think they'd be calling you "crazy" either, and I've stopped anti-depressants in November, but I was on them many different ones for years, maybe now I don't think that was such a great idea to stop them but I no longer have a MD looking after my mental health, so I screw up once again., but even saying your an addict is some pretty strong accusations. I think maybe you're reading into things and trying to justify your visits with a doctor, are you presently seeking any therapy outside of your doctor visits?? If not maybe that's something you should look into..Good Luck

My primary care physician was the one who gave me my first prescription for antidepressants.
She is caring and a great listener.
Maybe you need a new doctor.
