To other bipolar people.?!

Question: what do you do when you hit a low period. i'm having one and i keep getting these panic attacks. anything can launch them, a tv show that i'm watching, the internet, a phone call, pretty much anything. i usually get them during the night and i've had to go to sleep at 6 am on many occasions because i couldn't sleep because i thought i was gonna die. i even get suicidal.

I do not get suicidal, but i am extremely moody. anything sets me off too. i usually go take a nap if possible to calm down, and i'm fine when i wake up. i am not on any meds and have never been diagnosed as bi-polar, but most of the women in my family have been diagnosed. if taking a nap isn't an option becuase you can't sleep, force yourself to do something relaxing. go take a bubble bath with smell good candels and read a magazine. or if you have excercise dvd's do some of those. this morning for some reason the question "am i pregnant" annoyed me to no end and i answered about 5 of them "how the f do you expect strangers to know if YOU don't!!!" now that question is no big deal, whatever, i ignore it. also, buy some cheap sleeping pills at walgreens, they help. but my best suggestion is to do something that makes you feel good. go shave your legs and paint your nails. or get out of the house and go buy your friend or man a nice card. something cheap to take your mind off things. and just remember "this too shall pass". good luck!

I think you need to call your doc tomorrow. Not sleeping is terrible for us. Feeling suicidal when activated is almost worse.

Are you really having panic attacks or is it a mixed state (depressed and hypo/manic)? For me, mixed can be like have my insides wrenched plus depression, anxiety, and something more. I usually call my doctor and get my meds adjusted. She typically tells me to increase Seroquel until I can get into her office. I might also take some Klonopin which I usually don't take. I also limit stimulation because, yeah, anything can make me hurt.

It sounds like your med isn't working very well; i'd make an appointment right away and be sure to describe fully how that episode felt. Write it down now so you'll remember. do you feel suicidal at the same time you can't sleep? or does it alternate between suicidal and panic? that's important for doc to know.

seek medical help and meds that work

You may not be bipolar... that is a common term today, rather a circular file for everything that fits nothing else, rather like schizophrenia used to be.

More and more research is finding that diet and exercise plays a waaaayyyyyyyy larger role in how we think, and how our emotions get to us than anyone ever thought. In brief, we in the US eat what is called an "inflammatory diet"---too much in the way of refined starches and sugars... white flour, sugar, cakes, pies, white bread, etc. Change your diet... eat colorful fruits and veggies that you steam or bake, more fish, more chicken, that you bake as well, use oils rather than Crisco, fry next to nothing, juice your own fruit and veggie juices, and increase your fiber, blue berries, either frozen or fresh... get the idea? Get lots of Vitamin D either by supplements or sunlight (but don't burn... never, never burn!!!)--and 20 min or so exercise 4 or 5 times a week minimum... It doesn't have to be a butt buster, just walk!!!

I can tell you one thing.... I ended eating all that grease and fast foods, white bread, and processed meats..... and my panic attacks ended, my depression ended. Beef is rare in my diet, and I sleep like a baby most night... if it doesn't look like I am going to, I'll soak in a hot tub, and read. Melatonin is helpful too, as is warm milk. Keep a diary of what you eat, and how you feel. Eliminate stuff you think may be giving you fits... some people find that milk products gotta go.... Steel cut, or Irish or Scottish (all the same) Oatmeal for breakfast with walnuts and ground flax seed meal. Eggs are usually fine occasionally for most.... About the only thing I have to take now is an occasional Tylenol... all the anti-depressants are no longer necessary, and my energy is great.
Question? write.

are you on meds .if not get on meds. this is normal for a bi-polar to have vary highs an vary lows. i faces the panic head on some times i win an sometimes the panic wins .but the more you faces them the easy er it gets

I've been bipolar for 5 yrs and when I get in a really low spot I just try to think about positive things. I also think that if I kill myself that it's a very big sin. It's very hard when your bipolar and your in a low spot because anything can happen. You need to talk to someone or call for help if you think your low spot is low enough for you to hurt yourself. Good luck.

I think this is your warning that things are heading in a bad direction and it is time to readjust meds (if you are on them) and that it is time to get help. It is a good thing that you are able to recognize the early signs of relapse (of mood episodes). Managing the disorder is a constant challenge. Just because treatment works for a while does not mean that the particular combination will work indefinitely. It's common for it to need a bit of fine tuning.
The more you can recognize these things and make changes when necessary, the more in control of the disorder you will become.
It isn't easy and I wish you luck.
