Anyone out there living with someone with bi polar illness?!

Question: My husband was recently diagnosed with bi polar. I am really having a difficult time dealing with it. How do you cope? I feel like I am going to lose my mind. He is in the manic stage and goes 24/7. I have to watch him like a hawk. He has fallen off a ladder 3 times, just to name one thing. He has taken money out of my atm, and selling things to neighbors. This is just part of it. I need help coping, and can find no support groups. Please any advice you can give would be helpful. Thank you.

He has been diagnosed. Is he receiving any treatment. When someone is manic, it is VERY difficult to deal with. There are several medications that help with mania, so don't hesitate to speak with him and his doctor. It may be advisable block his use of your bank account. In exchange, you can open a small bank account for him to access for his small expenses. Be very careful, because a person in a manic phase can be devastating to your financial situation. Uncontrolled spending is a real problem and he is currently not thinking clearly.

For both your sake and your husband's, I hope that his illness has been diagnosed early. THe longer bipolar illness goes untreated, the more it can ruin your lives.

Try searching the web for support groups and go to Bipolar.com for information.

Good luck!

Has your husband been put on medication? If so it may take a while to get the right medication and dosage. Most people go through a few different medications before they find what really works for them. It's trial and error, sorry to say. Try to stay strong it may take a while.

The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance has support groups across the country. They are open to those with these illnesses, friends and family. Family and sometimes friends are usually there whenever I pop in.

If you husband was just dx'd, he (and you) are stuck on the medication search for a little while. It sucks, but once the right meds are found, life can return to normal providing he's compliant. The thing I'm wondering is why haven't his doctors upped his meds enough to calm him down. There are emergency meds that can usually do that assuming he isn't running into bad reactions. If he's doing all he can, then be patient. This isn't something he wants or is in much control of. If he's refusing meds, heck, I'm bipolar, and I'd close the joint accounts and move out for a while (just to make the point - no meds, no me).
